Wayne Colman
Chetwood
Baker City, 1924-2016
Wayne
Colman
Chetwood,
91, passed
away at his
home in
Halfway on
September
Wayne
21, 2016.
Chetwood
A
veteran of
World War II, he was an
Army Corporal
Sharpshooter who fought
in the Battle of the Bulge.
A Graveside service with
Military Honors will be
held on Friday, September
30, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at
Pine Haven Cemetery in
Halfway, Oregon.
Friends are invited to
join the family for a pot-
luck reception to be held
immediately following at
the VFW Hall in Halfway.
Wayne was born on De-
cember 26, 1924 in Mar-
cola, Oregon to Lee and
Augusta (Gussie) Chet-
wood.
His early years were
spent in a logging camp,
then his family moved to a
ranch on North Pine Creek
along the Wallowa Loop
Road.
He was drafted at age 19
into the Army, and due to
his years hunting, had the
skills to eventually become
a sharpshooter while at
basic training.
After what was certainly
not a pleasure cruise on the
refitted for war ocean liner
Queen Mary, he was even-
tually deployed to France
to join General George S.
Patton’s 3rd Brigade, 5th
Infantry Division. Cpl.
Chetwood spend 80 days
on the front lines “being
shot at 24 hours a day.”
In late January of 1945,
just as the Battle of the
Bulge, Hitler’s last desper-
ate offensive was nearing
its end, his company was
captured.
Minutes prior to this,
Cpl. Chetwood was injured
by shrapnel in his leg and
thumb, injuries which
were never treated while in
captivity.
He spent the next 65
days as a prisoner of war,
being moved from camp
to camp in advance of the
allies.
During one of the moves,
fearful of his declining
physical condition and
knowing if he couldn’t
keep up he’d be shot, he
managed to slip away
from his German captors
by ducking between two
buildings as he and the rest
of the prisoners were being
marched through a town.
He spent the night in a
dead end alley, and before
dawn walked out amongst
enemy soldiers behind a
German soldier pulling a
wagon.
He spent the next several
days eluding capture, dur-
ing which time he found
two other escaped Ameri-
cans, and they settled down
to wait for rescue by allied
forces to coming into the
area.
For his service, he re-
ceived a Purple Heart and
two Bronze Stars.
When he returned to
Pine Valley, Wayne had no
interest whatsoever in leav-
ing again.
He met a young woman,
Lena Bird, and they were
married on May 24, 1950.
They raised three sons,
Gene Clifton Chetwood,
Tony Wayne Chetwood,
and Earl Newton Chet-
wood.
He was very proud of
the ranch he built. Wayne
was a member of the lo-
cal VFW Post #7847 and
enjoyed being a part of the
organization.
He was preceded in death
by his son Earl who died in
a motor vehicle accident in
1977, two brothers Mack
and Jim.
Wayne worked for the
United States Forest Ser-
vice for 30 years, retiring
in December of 1981, and
continued ranching, fishing
and hunting until this past
year.
Wayne is survived by his
wife of 66 years, Lena,
his sons Tony and Gene,
Gene’s wife Elva and three
granddaughters, Sarah,
Brenda and Pamela and
three great grandchildren.
For those who wish to
make a memorial donation
in memory of Wayne, the
family suggests the VFW
Pine Valley Funeral Home
PO Box 543 Halfway,
