Sumpter celebrates
‘Music in the Meadow’
BY MEGHAN ANDERSCH
Meghan@TheBakerCountyPress.com
Sumpter held its an-
nual Music in the Meadow
event the weekend before
last, with musical acts and
events over Saturday and
Sunday. Whether due to
the ominous-looking skies
or events taking place
elsewhere, the turnout
was somewhat less than
anticipated.
Barbara Malone ex-
plained the weather wasn’t
actually too bad. It rained
a little on Saturday, though
not hard. Rain on Sunday
stopped just about the time
the event started setting up.
Those who came enjoyed
the music and atmosphere.
LeAnne Woolf said
that people were hugging
the musicians as they left
Saturday. Sunday after-
noon saw members of the
Powder River Dance Club
kicking it up on the dance
fl oor.
The event was hosted by
Sumpter Valley Commu-
nity Volunteers (SVCV)
who did everything from
man the entrance to cook
up concessions. They sold
hotdogs, hamburgers, and
brats, with soda and Barley
Browns beer also avail-
able. Entrance fee was
a suggested $5 donation
per person over age fi ve.
All money raised will
go to benefi t the town of
Sumpter.
Musical acts included
everything from jazz to
rock to country. Woolf
said Salt Lick #39 from
Baker City is back in exis-
tence, and they performed
with Trail’s End from
Emmett, Idaho for the fi rst
three hours on Saturday.
Mad Cassidy from La
Grande and Wallulah Junc-
tion from Hermiston also
played on Saturday. Sun-
day offered Salt Lick #39,
Just Us from Seneca, and
Frank Carlson from Baker
City. Woolf said they were
excited to have brought in
groups from further afi eld
this year.
Other activities included
a gunnysack race for the
kids on Saturday. The kids
also enjoyed the proximity
to the play equipment with
the event taking place in
Volunteer Park.
More photos of the event
are on the Music in the
Meadow and Base Camp
Baker Facebook pages,

Woolf said SVCV may
look at moving the event
back to August next year.
She said they were just so

spooked by all the fi res last
year, with the event having
to be cancelled.
August 2017 looks to
be an exciting month for
Sumpter. It marks the
centennial of the 1917 fi re.
Woolf said that although
Sumpter is not as close as
Prairie City to the center
line of the solar eclipse,
they’ll still be a pretty
good spot for viewing it.
Also, a group of mountain
bike cyclists are looking at
possibly coming through
Sumpter that month.
For more information on
upcoming Sumpter events
and ways to be involved,
attend the SVCV’s annual
meeting on October 15th at
the Sumpter Schoolhouse.
There will be a potluck
at 6 p.m. with the meeting
starting at 7 p.m. All are
welcome.
