CONTINUED FROM PAGE 5 By 6 p.m. fi re resources responding to the scene included three dozers, eight engines, one hand crew, an air attack, and two Single Engine Air Tankers (SEATs). High winds had pushed the fi re up to 20 acres. In addition to the Level 3 (GO) evacuation notice at Griffi n Gulch, a Level 2 (SET) evacuation order was issued for the area immediately surrounding Griffi n Gulch to the north side of Elk Creek. A Level 1 (READY) evacuation notice was issued for the Elk Creek, Washington Gulch, Old Auburn and the foothills south of Baker City. Tiffany Maness, whose The family lives up Griffi n Gulch said, ”We were very worried. We are the last house on Griffi n Gulch Lane, so it would have been ours up in fl ames fi rst.” By 6:30 p.m., the blaze had grown to 30 acres. Maness said, “I am very impressed with how quick the fi re crew got out here. They were on top of it! We saw them before we saw the fi re. We were auto- matically a Level 3 so we didn’t get to prepare. We had to grab some clothes and our kids and animals and leave.” Maness said she had family in Baker City, so she, her husband and three children headed to their home. “A lot of the families around here didn’t evacu- ate—they pretty much watched to see if it got any closer before they left,” she said. “But with our house being so close to it we felt a threat.” Shortly after 7 p.m., the winds began to shift to the south, which meant the fi re was being fanned away from Baker City instead of toward its Western Heights area. At that point, the area that had fallen into the initial Level 3 notice, was downgraded to a Level 2, and the Maness family began to feel the threat had passed, which it had. Resources from Keat- ing, Bowen Valley, and Baker Rural Fire Depart- ments, as well as Oregon Department of Forestry and the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest resources responded.
