On January 15, 1923
Theda Larayne Rhea was
welcomed into the world
by her parents; Ralph Rhea
Sr. and Stella (Keerins)
Rhea. She was a descen-
dent of an earlier home-
stead family, the Keerins,
who built a home and
began a long ranching
business.
The Rhea family
originally came to colonial
America, settling in Ten-
nessee. Family members
included a prominent
congressman. A county in
Tennessee bears the family
name (Rhea County).
Raised in Grant County,
Theda spent much of her
childhood at the family
homestead at Izee. Theda
attended and graduated
high school in John Day,
Oregon, and after high
school she worked for
D’ Clarks for 28 years in

lip J. Boyer in Vancouver,

design and dress were
impeccable. Theda loved
to knit and she enjoyed
making beautiful sweaters.
She also loved to go shop-
ping in Portland with her
dear friend Arlo Lee while
visiting her sister Rose-
mary. Later in life she had
a fondness for visiting with
her brother Ralph Rhea
and going out on the town
while she was there. Tak-
ing trips to Boise for lunch
and shopping trips to the
Coach store with her niece
Peggy was also something
she greatly enjoyed doing.
Her friends and family
were her lifeline to visiting
and shopping adventures.
She was an avid golfer
both in John Day and
Baker City and she was
also an avid bowler, bowl-
ing for Ellingson Lumber,
Theda won many trophies
for both bowling and golf-
ing. The Episcopal Church
in John Day, Eastern Star
in John Day, Quail Ridge
golf course in Baker City,
and the Offi cers Wife Club
in Montana were clubs
and organizations she was
proud to have been a mem-
ber of and affi liated with.
Theda is survived by her
niece Peggy Rhea-Case of
La Grande, niece Margaret
Rhea of Portland, nephew
Kerry Rhea of Canyon-
ville, nephew Daniel Rhea
