He also leaves behind
his sister, Janice McCau-
ley; grandchildren, Jarrod
Carter, Trisha Holcomb,
Riley McCauley, Jasmine
McCauley, Darryn McCau-
ley, Dani McCauley, Shane
McCauley, Sam McCau-
ley; seven great grandchil-
dren; numerous nieces and
nephews. He is preceded in
death by his parents Neil
and Nettie.
There will be a fam-
ily interment at Mt. Hope
Cemetery on July 15th at
11 a.m. Friends and family
are invited to a celebra-
tion of life potluck BBQ
on July 15th starting at
1:00pm at the residence of
Alan and Michele McCau-
ley, 3755 Court Avenue.

at her home.

Pauline Clipfell Shep-
pard started life in Holly-
wood, California on April
10, 1920. An accomplished
musician, she played a
mean marimba at the origi-
nal Four Square Church in
Los Angeles, and spent her
childhood in the shadows
of stars like Shirley Temple
and Mickey Rooney. At
age 13, on the heels of a
gubernatorial election that
went the wrong way ac-
cording to her grandmoth-
er’s political opinions, the
family matriarch moved
the extended family to Or-
egon. Pauli spent her teens
and the Great Depression
in Lyons, Oregon and after
high school attended John
Brown University in Ar-
kansas. During her fresh-
man year she instigated the
great toilet paper rebellion
and was encouraged to
leave the university. The
following year she enrolled
at Linfleld College where
she met Don Sheppard, and
burned a hole under the old
oak tree on campus as they
began a hot romance that
lasted 63 years.
After they married
in 1941, they moved to
Huntington, Oregon where
Pauli taught music and
gave birth to their first of
five daughters, Paula Sue.
Don was drafted to serve
in World War II and while
he was in Europe, Pauli
returned to Lyons to live
with her family. She gave
birth to daughter number
two shortly after Don
was drafted, and daughter
number three nine months
after he was home on
leave. Daughters four and
five were born after the
war when the family had
moved to Baker City.
Pauli and her husband Don
ran A-1 Realty in Baker
City where she worked
as a realtor, ran a real
estate school, and was a
licensed tax consultant.
They were also instrumen-
tal in founding the Baker
Heritage Museum. She was
a person who loved her
pets, ranging from a pig to
dogs, a squirrel or two, to
birds, and most recently
to all the feral cats in her
neighborhood that she had
spayed and neutered, and
named, and fed each day
while insisting they were
not her pets. Her faith was
always core to her life and
she spent many years as a
church instrumentalist and
attending weekly Bible
study groups. Art and
creativity were also fun-
damental to her being, and
she has left her family a
legacy of unique creations.
She was preceded
in death by her parents,
George and Edith Clipfell;
her husband, Don Shep-
pard; sister, Elaine Hadley;
and brother, Perry Clipfell;
her daughters, Paula Sue
Sheppard and Nelda Reth-
erford; son-in-law, Ronald
Johnson; and son-in-law,
Bill McCauley.
Pauli is survived by
her sister, Evelyn Knight;
sister-in-law, Peggy Dick;
daughters Mardell Shep-
pard McCauley; Shirleen
Sheppard Dunn and son-
in-law Bill Dunn; Doncla
Sheppard Thornberg and
son-in-law Nils Thorn-
berg, and son-in-law, Vic
Retherford. She is also
survived by 12 grandkids,
22 great-grandkids, and 6
great-great-grandkids.
We will remember
her for many things, but
mostly we will remember
her for (and be jealous of)
how great her legs still
looked at age 90.
