end of the valley. She was
the granddaughter of the
Oliver family who were
original homesteaders in
1878. Her mother Gladys
and father Bert Huff were
rugged pioneers.
She was the youngest of
fi ve children and she grew
up running the hills and the
Hooker Flat ranch, bare-

“You jumped the snakes.”

school in Pine town and
Halfway, and told of gal-
loping down main street on
her way home from school.
Billee married Wm.
( Bill ) Joseph and they
worked in the ship yards in
Portland during the second
world war. Billee was
a welder. She and Bill
had four children; Allen,
Denise, Keith and Paul.
She later married Warren
Epps and had a daughter,
Edrie. With the passing of
Warren she married Robert
Howard. On the passing of
Robert, Billee lived alone
for many years.
Billee loved to dance
and was an avid reader.
She was a great quilt-
maker and spent many
years making custom
rodeo shirts, for cowboys.
She liked to garden and
was always busy. In the
1980s Billee bought the
tavern now know as “Wild
Bills’ and turned it into
a full-service restaurant
and bar. She worked hard
to remodel, built the bar
addition and managed to
get the fi rst liquor license
issued in eastern Oregon,
in 17 years. She called it
‘Billee.” She loved the
business, the music and
fun but most of all the
people.
Many years were spent
with Billee managing the
Pine Valley Fair.
She raised the money to
buy the picnic tables, we
still use today and to pour
the concrete fl oor in the
exhibit hall that was still
dirt and sawdust. She was
very proud of the fair and
the community.
Billee is survived by
four of her children, eight
grandchildren and many
great and great great
grandchildren. She is
greatly missed but she told
us all, she was ready to go.
