The Brownlee Crappie
Shootout Kayak Fishing
Tournament sponsored by
the Northwest Kayak
Anglers Association was
held in the Huntington area
of the Brownlee Reservoir
on the Snake River on
Saturday, May 14.
The entrants paid a $30
entry fee and were allowed
to fish in human powered
kayaks from Brownlee
Dam to Farewell Bend
State Park. They were al-
lowed to fish from sunrise
to 3 p.m. for bass, crappie
and catfish with the event
winner being decided by
the sum total of entrants’
three longest catches to the
quarter-inch.
The determined kayak
fishermen came from all
over the pacific northwest
to battled high winds,
cloudy skies and intermit-
tent showers to complete
their quest for the elusive
“big one.”
According to Jared
Rivera, organizer of the
event, “We hope to make
it an annual event here.”
Kayakers used the boat
ramp at Spring Recreation
Park and Campground to
enter and leave the river
as well as their weighing
point before heading to
Lion’s Park in Huntington
for the awards ceremony
and barbecue to round out
the event.
This year’s winners
were: Biggest Crappie,
Tie between Justin Flynn
of Baker City and Jason
McCormick of Salem; Big-
gest Bass, Jordan Parker
of Tri-Cities; Biggest
Catfish, Mike Ragland of
Tri-Cities; and All Around
Tournament Winner, Jared

This past weekend Forest Access for All (FAFA) members traveled to Bozeman, Montana to attend the
Citizens For Balanced Use (CBU) 8th annual banquet/fundraiser. Baker County residents filled a banquet
table to show support for their ally/sister organization. They participated in the raffles and auctions while
enjoying a great meal. Unfortunately none of them had the winning raffle ticket for the donated CanAm ATV
or Honda generator. (The year Marty Stroy FAFA member attended he had the lucky number for the ATV.)
Three speakers, notably including CBU Chief Executive Officer and Montana State Representative, Kerry
White, shared concerns, which mirror FAFA’s concerns. Members listened to common concerns of de-
creasing access, over-regulation, and an update of pending legal actions while repeating the admonition to
stay involved. Pictured at the front table, Baker County residents Wanda Ballard, John Creighton, Ramona
Creighton, Lorrie Harvey, Bill Harvey, and John George of Bates.
