SUMPTER VALLEY RR VOLUNTEER
WEEKEND
Saturday, May 14, and Sunday May 1. is a great
introduction to becoming an active volunteer at
the Sumpter Valley Railroad. Attendees learn
about safe operations, rules and regulations, train
handling, crew positions, maintenance, equipment
and facilities, railway history, and get a friendly
meet and greet with your fellow volunteers. You do
not need to be a current member, and all ages are
welcome to attend, though you must be 18 or older
to work on the trains or operate equipment. Lunch
will be provided both days, with training getting
underway at 9:00 a.m. at McEwen. There will also
be work events on Friday May 13 and Monday

HUNTINGTON CATFISH DERBY
Monday, May 30. Enter in the Catfi sh tournament
and see if you have what it takes to catch the big-
gest catfi sh for the day or the entire event.The fun
starting on Friday with the sign up for the catfi sh
tournament then on Saturday starts the fun. Come
and join The Hookers and Cookers Catfi sh Cook
off. Take a walk through the fl ea market. Want to
sit for a while and meet fun and interesting people,
try your luck with bingo, or help judge the cook
off, sit and listen to the music. Want to kick up
your heels, the get in on the street dance and grab
a partner and dance till you drop. Lots of prizes to
win in many events like the Duck Derby, Bingo,
The Catfi sh cook off, Catfi sh tournament. Getting
hungry? After the cook off you can try out the food
from the contestants of the cook off, or go to the
VFW and enjoy their steak feed.

The Baker High School Honors and Awards
Night will be Wednesday, June 1, at 7 p.m. at the
BHS auditorium.

City, Oregon,
passed away
on April 24,
2016 at St.
Alphonsus

tion of life will be held on
May 28, 2016 at 3:00 PM
at the Baker City VFW.
David was born in
Klamath Falls, Oregon
on November 27, 1942 to
Elmer Antony MidKiff and
Mary Nell (Istitt) MidKiff.
Throughout his childhood
he relocated to Umatilla
and Hermiston following
his dad as he worked in
construction and building
the McNary Dam. As a
teenager, David worked at
the Baker Livestock Yard
and in several grocery
stores as a box boy. In
1962, David enlisted into
the United States Army
and completed his GED
in 1966 while serving his
country as a Staff Sergeant.
During his time in the
Army, David and his fi rst
wife Charlotte McKenzie
of Irrigon, Oregon had a
daughter, Ginger, who was
born in Oregon and a son,
Cameron, who was born
while David was stationed
in Germany. David was
married to his second wife
for a short period of time;
Cordelia (Mahon) Spain of
Sonoma, California.
On May 9, 1971 he mar-
ried Janet Bredehoft at her
mother’s house in Boyes
Hot Springs, California
and all of the family was
able to attend. Janet and
David were together for a
total of 46 years before his
passing.
During his lifetime Da-
vid owned many business-
es and held many jobs. In
1972 he purchased a small
ranch in Klamath Falls,
Oregon as well as worked
for Weyerhaeuser until he
was injured and needed
surgery in 1975. David
then moved to Baker
City, Oregon and pur-
chased the Green Gables
motel until he sold it in
1981. While working as
a part-time ranch laborer,
David learned how to paint
professionally from Lee
Cotton and in 1986 he
started his own painting
company, Dave Co. Paint-

a custodian at the Senior
Center for three years
during this time. In 1997
David purchased Baker
RV and operated the busi-
ness until 2001 when he
became semi-retired. After
retiring, while he was still
able, David and George
Swanson took many enjoy-
able horse camping trips at
Minam.
David enjoyed many
hobbies which included
The Mounted Posse youth
trail rides, breaking horses,
R.C. 10 racing, dirt car
racing, hunting, fi shing,
and camping. He was a
member of the Mounted
Posse from 1999-2016
and enjoyed his affi liation
with the Posse tremen-
dously. David was also
a volunteer for the Cub
Scouts in Haines, Oregon
and a member of the Baker
Black Powder Club where
he was given the nickname
“Shakey Dave.”
Survivors include his
wife Janet MidKiff of
Baker City, his son Dan
and daughter in-law Mi-
chelle MidKiff of Hermis-
ton, Oregon, son Cameron
MidKiff of California,
daughter Ginger MidKiff
of California, grandson
David C. MidKiff of Pend-
leton, Oregon, and several
cousins in Oregon as well
as many friends and great
neighbors.
David is preceded in
death by his parents, his
sister Bunny Jo Stilwell
and his son David Leland
MidKiff.
