SCHLAHT, Nathan
Ed Steinmetz
Baker City, 1944-2016
Ed Stein-
metz passed
away April
11 at the age
of 72 after a
long battle
with cancer.
His wife
Ed
Janet, as al- Steinmetz
ways, was at
his side. Ed grew up on an
orchard in Mission, Cali-
fornia, part of the vibrant
Portuguese community.
In Mission he spent his
time racing and working
on progressively faster
cars, sneaking around with
Janet Gove, and engaging
in apricot wars with his
cousins until discovered by
his Uncle Johnny.
Upon graduating from
high school, Ed became a
lineman apprentice at
PG&E.
After completing the
apprenticeship, within a
month he was a foreman,
a position he maintained
throughout his career in
California and Oregon.
One of his early projects
involved stringing power
across the San Francisco
Bay along the San Mateo
Bridge.
In 1964 Ed married his
high school sweetheart
Janet. After the birth of
their sons Shawn and
Jason, they sought a more
rural place to raise their
family. Baker, Oregon is
where they settled in 1972
and where they remained.
Usually cold, Ed found the
transition to Northeast Or-
egon winters a challenge.
A life-long lover of the
outdoors, Ed had hunting
and fi shing stories span-
ning California, Oregon,
and Wyoming. One epic,
snowy trip to Wyoming
with Janet involving frozen
sleeping bags was recount-
ed countless times.
In 1995 Ed retired and
was able to spend more
time hunting and fi shing.
He served as treasurer
of the Baker Trap Club,
ensuring successful
shoots and helping at the
clubhouse. Ed and Janet
travelled to shoots through-
out the West. Ed was the
Oregon State Amateur Trap
Shooting Association
Champion several times in
his class. He also enjoyed
weekly poker games in
Baker with friends and in-
corporated visits to casinos
on most trips.
In addition to his work as
a lineman, Ed raised cattle,
pigs, turkeys, etc. on the
family’s 15-acre farm on
the outskirts of Baker. He
liked to garden, espe-
cially growing fava beans
for Janet to cook in the
traditional Portuguese way.
He engaged in friendly
competitions regarding
size and sweetness of corn
every year.
Ed is survived by his
wife of 52 years, Janet;
“brother” Al Feleciano
(Reno, Nevada); two sons
and daughters-in-law,
Shawn and Catherine (La
Grande) and Jason and
Christian (Charlottesville,
Virginia); and granddaugh-
ters Jillian and Anastasia.
A celebration of his life
will be held at Sunridge
Inn on April 22 at 2 p.m.
The family looks forward
to hearing stories of your
time with Ed.
