About 100 people attended a volunteer appreciation dinner in Halfway.

Around a hundred
Panhandle residents and
friends enjoyed a big Pot
Luck Dinner held at the
Pine Eagle Charter Grade
School in Halfway, April
14, to honor area volun-
teers.
Vickie Johnson,
Halfway, who is on the
volunteer board overseeing
the Pine Eagle Clinic, a
dinner sponsor, said that in
past years there have been
appreciation dinners, but in
planning this year’s dinner,
Camie deCastro, Principal
and Superintendent of the
school, said she’d like to
have the school involved,
so they extended invita-
tions to include other
volunteers as well.
A large banner extend-
ing across the stage end of
the room, behind speak-
ers, carried a list of forty
or more local volunteer
organizations and boards
of volunteers. It is upon
the shoulders of these local
people the burden is car-
ried to provide emergency
medical and ambulance
services, a fi re department
in both Pine and Eagle
Valley, oversight of the fall
Rodeo and Baker County
Fair, as well as this long
line of many other ser-
vices.
The decision to recognize
more volunteers was well
received, and tables were
fi lled with delicious food.
“I am amazed how ev-
erybody helps each other,”
said Johnson. “I have been
here only a few years, I
came here from Portland.
I have never seen people
work together like they do
here,” she said.
The response included
people from the Keat-
ing rural fi re department,
which frequently provides
ambulance and fi re sup-
port.
It should be noted, since
there are fewer people in
eastern Baker County, the
burden to carry the bulk of
essential services falls on
fewer people.
