FBLA REGIONAL SKILLS COMPETITION
Thursday, February 4. The annual Regional Skills
Competition for the Future Business Leaders of Amer-
ica will be held Thursday, Feb. 4 at Eastern Oregon
University. More than 400 students from 14 regional
high schools have registered to compete. The event
culminates with a public awards assembly at 12:30
p.m. in McKenzie Theatre in Loso Hall. Participants
will be tested in 40 different business-related fields.
The top 10 finishers from each event compete at the
state FBLA conference April 7-9 in Portland. From
there, the top contestants advance to the national con-
ference June 29-July 2 in Atlanta, Ga. FBLA chapters
from Baker, Elgin, John Day, Helix, Heppner, Imbler,
La Grande, Milton-Freewater, Nyssa, Ontario, Pendle-
ton, Stanfield, Union and Vale are participating.

LEGISLATIVE HOTLINE
Tuesday, February 9. Rep. Cliff Bentz (R-Ontario)
and Sen. Ted Ferrioli (R-John Day) will hold a “Leg-
islative Hot-topic” (video conference) call once during
the 35 day 2016 Legislative Session, which will con-
vene February 1st. Hosted by the Baker County Cham-
ber of Commerce, the video appearance will provide
Baker County residents with the opportunity to discuss
with the Representative and Senator legislative events
and other issues of statewide and local interest. The
meeting will be held at the Baker County OSU Exten-
sion Office’s media room (2600 East St., Baker City)
on Tuesday, February 9th at 7:00 a.m. (PST).

Sharolet Mae was born
on March 12, 1934 to Cecil
and Cordie (Gorden)
Harter in Chouteau,
Oklahoma. Just about 3
weeks after her birth, the
family moved to Stockton,
California where Shar (as
she liked to be called) was
raised and educated.
Shar and her first hus-
band Kenneth Eugene
“Gene” Harrison had
seven children; Connie,
Andy, Mike, Rick, Dave,
Kimberly and Mark. The
family made their home in
Amador County. After 25
years of marriage, the two
divorced. Shar later mar-
ried Gerald Harter, they
met in Stanwood,
Washington and lived in
Marysville, Washington.
Gerald died in 1995. She
then moved to Baker City,
just off of 17th Street to
be closer to her family. In
2009, she moved into Set-
tlers Park Assisted Living
Facility.
During her life she
worked in the restaurant
field. She loved to sew,
make quilts, embroider,
crochet, knit and do crafts.
She was an avid reader of
non-fiction crime books,
loved the animal planet
channel on TV and could
do 1000 piece jigsaw
puzzle in a day or two. She
also loved to get out to
fish or travel to the coast to
go crabbing.
She was preceded in
death by her parents and
husband Gerald.
Shar is survived by her
children; Connie and hus-
band Allen Currie, Andy
Harrison, Rick Harrison,
Dave and Christine Har-
rison all of Baker City,
Oregon; Mike Harrison of
North Carolina; Kimberly
Harrison of Umatilla,
Oregon, Mark and Regina
of Vancouver, Washing-
ton; 12 Grandchildren and
15 great grandchildren,
numerous nieces and
nephews.

William “Bill” Her-
man Nill III was born on
October 29, 1934 in North
Hollywood, California to
William and June (Schultz)
Nill Jr. Bill attended
schools in San Fernando
Valley, Redding and gradu-
ating from high school at
Shasta Union High School
in 1953.
Bill was married in
1953 in Round Mountain,
California and they had
four children.
During Bill’s life he
worked heavy construction
and was for quite some
time an Oregon Contractor.
He also worked in Law
Enforcement in Yreka,
California.
Bill enjoyed hunting,
fishing, bike riding and
backpacking; “he was
always looking forward
to seeing what was over
the next mountain.” He
loved aviation, he was a
pilot and owned his own
plane. Memorable times
in Bills life included taking
a 6 point bull elk with his
own home made archery
equipment; obtaining his
private pilot license and
building a cabin on the
Kenai in Alaska. One of
his favorite thoughts was
“What goes around, comes
around.” Bill will be most
remembered for being the
most sincere, genuine, car-
ing man you’d ever meet.
He will be missed.
He was preceded in
death by his parents and
his longtime four legged
lab “Babe.” Babe died just
a few days prior to Bills
death.
Bill is survived by
his children Debbie of
Turlock, California and
Cindy of Houston, Texas;
sons Bryan and Kurtis of
Soldotna, Alaska; Brother
Roger Nill;6 grandchildren
and 5 great grandchildren.

Baker City, 1937-2016
LaVesta Mae Swinyer,
78, of Baker City died
January 25, 2016 while at
Meadowbrook Place. A
public pot luck memorial
service is scheduled for
January 30, 2016 at 2:00
P.M. at the old Fireside,
2000 Well Street, in Baker
City.
LaVesta was born Febru-
ary 28, 1937 in Pocatello,
Idaho to Walter T. Horton
and Sara E. Churchill. She
was born and raised in
Pocatello, Idaho where she
and her parents lived on a
farm in Parma until 1978
and that was where she
raised her two children.
She moved to Baker City
in 1980 and married
Charles Swinyer in 1984.
In 1989, LaVesta went to
cetified nursing assistant
training and began provid-
ing in home care until she
retired. Her caring and nur-
turing personality was seen
and adored by everyone
she encountered. She will
be greatly missed by all
who knew and loved her.
LaVesta enjoyed quilting,
dancing, card games, board
games, camping, fishing,
gardening, sewing and car-
ing for her cats. She was a
member of the Eagles Club
and the Harvest
Assembly of God.
LaVesta is survived by
her husband, Charles
of Baker City. daughter
Wendy L. Wall, son Monty
Wall, daughter-in-law
Wendy M. Wall, sister
Madge Bern, brother-in-
law’s, Robert Bern and
Patrick Crampton, grand-
daughters Cassandra Reed-
er and Autumn Hanley, all
of Baker City, Or. She also
has a grandson, Alex Wall
of Albany, Or. and a grand
daughter, Crystal Pepper of
Hermiston, Or. and eight
great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death
by her father Walter Hor-
ton and mother Sara
Churchill, a sister Ellen
Crampton and a great
grandchild, Tiana Colins.
