GOLD DREDGE OPEN HOUSE
Saturday, October 24 and Sunday, October 25,
Friends of the Sumpter Valley Gold Dredge and
OPRD (Oregon Parks and Recreation) invite you
to an end of the 2015 season Open House, 9 a.m.
to 4 p.m. Have a cup of coffee and a pastry while
enjoying significant discounts on items in our gift
shop, learn the history of this 1935 Gold Dredge,
learn how to pan for gold and get a guided tour of
the Dredge itself. We hope to see you here!
ANNUAL COLOR WALK
Saturday, October 24. Baker High School is
hosting their Annual Color Run - a 1.5K run/
walk. Pre-register at the Baker High School’s
main office or register the day of the race at 9:30
a.m. The race will officially begin at 10:30 a.m.
The price of entry is $10 and $15 if you want
a T-shirt. All proceeds will be going to a local
family in need. The start will be at the Baker City
Sports Complex batting cages. If you have any

KIDS COAT DRIVE
Saturday, October 24 and Saturday, November
7. Rotary Club holds its annual “Coats for Kids”
winter coat drive. Drop off a new or gently used
coat at Sorbenots in Baker City and get a free
coffee or drink of your choice.
EAGLE VALLEY FALL FESTIVAL
Sunday, October 25. The last Sunday in October
the Annual Eagle Valley Grange Fall Festival
will take place. Activities will kick off at 4 p.m.
and at 5 p.m. the potluck will start. There will be
kids’ games, cake walks, Trunk-or-Treat, costume
contest, and all manner of fun, including, a raffle.
Costumes are strongly encouraged, and those
of you that are attending are asked to remember
that this is a family friendly festival. No grue-
some or other inappropriate costumes. Prizes will
be awarded in numerous categories. For more

AUXILIARY BOOK FAIR
Monday, October 26th. Saint Alphonsus Aux-
iliary - Baker City will be holding their annual
book fair Monday October 26th from 9 a.m. to 2
p.m. The book fair will be located in the hospi-
tal breezeway. There will be a wide selection of
books as well as other gifts at 40% to 70% off
retail pricing. Come and bring a friend. Proceeds
will go to benefit Saint Alphonsus Medical Cen-
ter – Baker City and our Auxiliary Scholarship
Fund for students seeking a career in the medical

DOWNTOWN TRICK-OR-TREAT

A memorial service was
planned for 11:00 a.m. on
Saturday, October 17 at
Gray’s West & Company
Pioneer Chapel with Pastor
Jesse Whitford of the Bak-
er City Christian Church
officiating. Friends were
invited to join the family
for a reception following
the service.
Don was a life long resi-
dent of South Baker area
of Baker City. He was born
December 26, 1932 to Bel-
gium immigrants, Bruno
and Sabila (Lanchriet) De
Roest, who had settled
in Baker as farmers and
ranchers in 1912. Don was
the youngest of nine chil-
dren, with three sisters and
five brothers, all of whom
have passed on.
Don worked for the Or-
egon Lumber Company for
many years, drove school
bus, worked for Commer-
cial Welding and was a
member of the Teamsters
Union.
In 1960 he bought his
first backhoe and started
his business, Don De Roest
Excavating and Contract-
ing, which he owned and
operated for 52 years. He
was certified to install
septic tanks and drain
fields, installing numer-
ous systems in the Baker
County area. In later years
he used his water truck to
assist the Forest Service in
extinguishing many fires
both near and far.
Don married Louise
Bohn in 1956 at the age
of 23 and had 4 children.
The couple divorced after
25 years. He then met and
enjoyed the companionship
of Hazel Berdahl, his sig-
nificant other of 34 years
until his passing.
He was a life-long
Catholic and enjoyed
snowmobiling, hunting,
fishing, dancing and camp
out parties at the “Park on
the Powder River” which
he owned and developed.
Don and Hazel frequently
visited the casinos in
Jackpot and Winnemucca
where they enjoyed play-
ing the slot machines.
Don was also an active
member in the Elks #338
and Eagles Lodge. Five
years ago Don adopted his
beloved Chihauhau/Ter-
rier mix dog, Bubba, who
added much pleasure to his
final years.
Don was preceded in
death by his son, Dale,
who died last year.
He is survived by his
daughter, Christine Gareis
and husband Dennis of
California, sons, Tony De
Roest of Nevada, Curtis
De Roest and wife Jill of
Alaska, five grandsons, one
granddaughter and his long
time companion, Hazel
Berdahl of Baker City.

the Veteran’s Memorial

in Baker City. Friends

Veteran’s Memorial Club.
She was born to the late
Robert Samuel Edison
and Marceline Edison on
March 11, 1952 in Baker
City, Oregon.
Sharon grew up and lived
in Baker City, Oregon her
entire life. She attended
grade school at Central
Elementary in Baker City
and graduated from Baker
High School in 1970.
Sharon married Carl
Benny Myers on February
22, 1974 in Baker City.
They had three children;
Andy Myers, Desiree My-
ers, and Brian Myers. They
were married 23 years and
later divorced.
Most of her years were
spent being a mother and
homemaker. She worked
as caregiver for quite some
years for the elderly. A
little later in life she found
a job she truly enjoyed,
working at Elkhorn Ado-
lescent Treatment Center/
New Directions NW with
troubled teenagers. This
job brought her much ful-
fillment before she became
unable to work any longer.
Sharon is survived by
her children Andy Myers,
Desiree Myers and Brian
Myers, Two grandchildren
Ellie Nguyen and Colby
Nguyen; three brothers
James Edison, Ronald
Edison, Larry Edison; two
sisters Carolyn Nelson
and Marilyn Edison. Her
Mother and father in-law
Carl and Betty Myers;
numerous nephews, nieces
and other relatives.
Her wonderful smile and
bright blue eyes will be
forever remembered. She
always had an open door
to friends and family, her
kindness always present.
She was loved by many,
but will be remembered as
an exceptional mother and
grandmother.

Delbert Francis was
born on January 21,1933 in
a farm house west of New-
burg, Oregon, to Francis
and Mildred (Cornwell)
Stone. He was raised in the
Portland area until 1943
then moved to a small 10
acre farm in Tualatin, Or-
egon. He attended 3rd thru
8th grade there and gradu-
ated from Sherwood High
School in 1951 with top
honors as a Chapter Mem-
ber President of Region
3 of the Student Council
Association of Oregon.
Del met a “cute blonde” on
a small neighboring farm.
She “Doris” was in the 8th
grade at the time. She also
went to Sherwood High
School where he kept an
eye on her until graduation.
Del claimed to have kept
all the guys away until he
finally proposed in 1953.
They had five children
together.
During his Junior year,
Del worked part time
doing farm work. At the
end of his senior year, he
worked part time in retail
at the local lumber yard
until the fall of 1952. After
his birthday in January
the draft got his attention
and he joined the Army
and in February of 1953
and served with the 82nd
Airborn until 1956. After
his honorable discharge he
had landscape, excavating
and asphalt paving busi-
nesses until 1969. Del than
worked as an equipment
operator with the Wal-
lowa Whitman US Forest
Service until he retired in
1990. Del enjoyed being
an equipment operator
and the responsibility and
projects assigned to him at
the Forest Service as well
as the personnel he worked
with.
He also enjoyed a life-
long passion of flying his
ultra light plane over Wal-
lowa and Baker Counties
and would also take it with
him when he headed South
in the winter.
His family will miss his
humor, smile and his never
ending generosity with
anyone he became even
remotely acquainted with.
He was always there to
lend a helping hand. We
love you, Dad.
It was Dad’s wishes not
to have a memorial service
but for a family gathering
instead.
He was preceded in
death by his parents and a
sister, Janice Sanderson.
