Sam was born in Fresno, California and raised in Kingsburg and Dunlap, California. He was the third born of eight chil- dren. He went into the Army at the age of 17 and served from 1954 to 1957 during the Korean War. His life’s work was Heavy Equipment Opera- tor. He was in Operating Engineer Local #701. Then he went to the North Slope in Alaska when the pipeline was built, Local #302. Sam loved to fi sh, hunt and look for gold. He loved summer, the hot- ter the better so he could grow a garden and be busy. Sitting around the house was not one of his favorite things. Sherry and Sam had their 46th Wedding Anniversary a few days before his death. Sam is survived by his wife Sherry of Richland, Oregon; Daughters Tacy Bowers and husband Mark of Preston, Washington, Christy Hand and her husband Tom of Klamath Falls, Oregon; Sons Ross Anderson and Travis Can- non of Richland, Oregon; 13 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren. Wood known most as Dan and by some as Mountain Man. A wonder- ful husband, father and friend who will be dearly missed. He leaves behind his wife of 46 years, Dawn; fi ve children: Daniel Wood, William Wood, Pamela Haney, Traci Wood and Sandi Cardoza; 21 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Dan enjoyed life at Pine Creek for 14 years, hunt- ing, fi shing and hiking the mountains. The fourth of seven children, he is survived by his brothers Mickey and Ron and baby sister Kathy. The family lived in Durkee but moved to LaGrande when he was a baby. He attended grade school and high school there. As a teen, Steve studied in Europe one summer with his cousin, Cathy Hindman Reiter and other La Grande High School students. After high school, Steve moved to Portland for a short time. He then returned to Durkee where he enjoyed the rest of his life. He was proud of his knowledge of fam- ily history and gathered photographs from ances- tors to distribute to family members. In 1973 Steve briefl y visited his sister, Judy in New York City. In 1975 he had an exciting experience riding with the Bicenten- nial Wagon Train for two weeks although they encountered rough winds during most of the ride. The wagon train was in route to Valley Forge, PA. Steve loved music, danc- ing and clocks, collecting an assortment of them during his lifetime. He was loved by everyone and had a kind, gentle spirit and a quick wit. He was a loving brother who was loyal to his aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Everyone will remember his laughter and smiling face. Steve is survived by his brother Jack and wife Mercy, sisters, Sue and husband Elwood Wirth, Patty Hindman, Judy and husband Chuck VanDyke, Toni and husband Joe Al- ford, his Aunt Pat (Gerry) Coleman and numer- ous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his sister, Shirley Bloomer.
