Recent Baker High
School graduate Bridger
Cook has been chosen to
represent Baker Bulldogs
football in Oregon’s 63rd
Annual East West Shrine
All-Star Football Game.
The game is scheduled
this Saturday, August 1 at
Baker Memorial Football
Stadium.
Cook graduated from
BHS as a recipient of the
Lee Webb Award recogniz-
ing his love for football
and the Austin Jones
Award honoring the most
valuable Senior. Cook
expects to play the Center
position and defensive
lineman for the Shriner’s
East team on Saturday.
Like so many players
who’ve preceded him,
Cook’s fi rst words about
the honor of being se-
lected for the East West
Shrine All-Star Football
Game focus around the
experience of visiting the
Portland Shriners Hospital
for Children.
“It was a life-changing
experience for sure,” Cook
said of his visit to the
hospital.
The annual summertime
all-star classic brings
together Oregon’s best ath-
letes from the 1A through
4A conferences for the
higher purpose of rais-
ing funds for the Shriners
hospital.
“The players learn why

they play in this important
game when they visit the
Portland Shriners Hospital
for Children,” states the
Shriners game mission.
“This meeting with the
children forms bonds be-
tween the players and the
patients. The players learn
how important their contri-
bution is to these children
through interaction and
play, leaving the players
with a new understand-
ing of their mission. The
players participate with a
common goal and although
they play on two different
teams, they are united in
their purpose and are only
opponents on the fi eld.”
The teams practice and
stay on the campus of
Eastern Oregon University
in La Grande.
“Both teams stay in the
dorms at EOU and that
allows us all to be together
and to make friends with
the West team,” said Cook.
“It’s a lot different than a
playoff game.”
Cook pays thanks to his
parents for the sacrifi ces
they made to support his
athletic endeavors and to
the BHS football coaching
staff, and head coach Dave
Johnson in particular, who
he said were among the
best in the state of Oregon.
“I also want to thank the
Shriner community for
allowing me to represent
them and to help raise
money for the hospital,”
he said.
Cook plans to attend
Boise State University in
the Fall to work toward a
mathematics degree with
an emphasis on teaching.
Oregon’s 63rd Annual
East West Shrine All-Star
Football Game held Sat-
urday, August 1, begins a
little later in the day than
during the past several
years with kickoff sched-
uled for 5 p.m. The game
will be aired on ROOT
Sports Network August
3rd through August 9.
The annual Shrine parade
winds its way through the
street of downtown Baker
City beginning at 11 am,
Saturday morning.
Be ready to hunt with hunter’s
education classes in fall
SALEM, Ore.—Keep the
kids occupied this summer
and get them ready for fall
hunting. Register them for
a hunter education class or
fi eld day happening around
the state in August and
early September.
ODFW offers two
types of hunter educa-
tion classes: a traditional
classroom experience or
independent study, which
kids can do from home via
workbook or online course.
Independent study students
also need to attend a fi eld
day to receive their hunter
education certifi cate. Both
types of class about 12
hours to complete.
For a list of current class-
es and fi eld days open in
Oregon, visit the ODFW’s
license sales site and click
View All Classes-Work-
shops / Hunter Ed Class
or Hunter Ed Field Day
tab. New classes are added
regularly so check back if
you don’t see a date, time
or location that works for
you. Registering for a class
or fi eld day costs $10.
Independent study stu-
dents can take one of three
online courses (fees range
from $13 to $24.50 and
include mobile-friendly
options) or request a free
workbook by emailing
odfw.info@state.or.us.
These students must also
sign up for and complete a
fi eld day, where they prac-
tice safe fi rearm handling

“It can be diffi cult to
keep the kids busy this
time of year, but our sum-
mer courses allow them
to complete this important
class before school starts,
and in time for fall hunting
season,” said James Reed,
ODFW hunter education
coordinator. “If you can’t
get them to a traditional
class, they can do most of
the class online or through
a take-home workbook.”
Most Oregon’s volunteer
hunter education instruc-
tors hunt in the fall, so we
usually have more classes
available in summer,”
Reed added.
Adults are also welcome
to attend any hunter educa-
tion classes and may take
the adult online course,
which doesn’t require a
fi eld day for certifi cation.
Hunter education is
required for all hunters
under the age of 18 and
encouraged for adults, too.
The classes cover impor-
tant issues including hunter
ethics and respect for pri-
vate landowners; wildlife
management and identifi -
cation; fi rearms handling
and safety; hunt prepa-
ration and techniques;
survival; and introductory
bowhunting.
All classes and fi eld days
are taught by certifi ed
volunteers dedicated to
passing on the tradition of
hunting to future genera-
tions. These volunteer in-
structors teach and certify
about 6,500 students state-
wide each year in hunter
education.

In team scoring, La Grande women were 6th, Baker
7th. Mens team scoring La Grande was 7th, Baker 11th.
Overall team scoring was La Grande 7th, Baker 8th,
which was fabulous considering the small number of
swimmers from each team.
