ELKS CLUB CASINO NIGHT
Friday, July 10, 8 p.m. the Motorcycle Travel
America Foundation is hosting the first Casino
Night on Friday, July 10 at the Baker Elks Lodge.
Everyone is welcome to join in the fun, which
begins at 8 p.m. with games like Blackjack, Rou-
lette, Craps an.d Texas Holdem’. The event will
continue until midnight. Food and drinks will be
available to purchase at the bar at the club.
CONCERT IN THE PARK
Sunday, July 12 in the Geiser-Pollman Park.
Baker’s own big band, the Blue Yesterdays, are
playing at 2 p.m.

MINERS JUBILEE

July 19. Parade, vendors in the park, a food court,
sidewalk sales, mining demonstrations and kids’
activities. Bronc Riding Friday night and Bull
Riding Saturday night, along with a carnival and
various class reunions.
BLACKSMITHING DEMO
Friday, July 17, 10 a.m. till 2 p.m. at the Baker
Heritage Museum across the street from the City
Park at the corner of Campbell and Grove Streets.
FREE FAMILY FISHING DAY
Saturday July 18, at Anthony Lake from 9:00
a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The Oregon Department of Fish
and Wildlife (ODFW) and the Wallowa-Whitman
National Forest (WWNF) will be on hand to teach
young people how to bait, cast, and reel in their
catch from the freshly stocked lake. Adults can
get tips on basic rigging, fish identification and
casting. Loaner fishing rods will be available for
children.
OLD FASHIONED QUILT SHOW
Saturday, July 18 at the Baker Heritage Mu-
seum, noon till 2 p.m. Local quilters tell how it’s
done.
FRIENDS OF LIBRARY BOOK SALE
During Miners’ Jubilee at the Baker County

CHALK IT UP TO ART

Lloyd was born in Baker
City, Oregon on October
6, 1951 to the late James
Lloyd, Sr. and Darelene
Rea. He attended Baker
High School and continued
his education at Eastern
Oregon University, where
he graduated in 1974 with
a Bachelor of Business de-
gree. In 1972, he married
his high school sweetheart
and childhood friend,
Marydee Leep. Lloyd was
the proud owner of Rain-
bow Music. Lloyd was
a beloved member of the
community and enjoyed
hunting, fishing, chewing
tobacco, Chicago Bears
football, baseball, song
writing, repairing guitars,
family, telling stories, and
talking with his friends.
JLR was a Blues Hall
of Fame celebrity and
is respected by fans and
players alike. His early
years touring and playing
with many blues greats
shaped his drive and pas-
sion to keep that kind of
blues music alive. JLR
had a passion for cranking
out his own real from the
heart, raw and grinding,
rockin’ blues. He spent
the early years listening to
a long list of great musi-
cians talk about life and
music, and during that time
he states, “I just shut up
and listened.” At age 9 he
started playing bass, at 15
he started his first band ~
The Perils. During High
School he played with Paul
Revere of Paul Revere and
The Raiders. After college

The family of Kent and Anita Nelson

Esther Radiance, daughter of Troy
and Nathalia (Strommer) Tubbs of
Halfway, Oregon was Stillborn on
June 30, 2015, just one day of being
31 weeks old. A private family grave-

Canned Heat, which gave
him the opportunity to
meet and play with some
of the greatest blues artists.
After years of living with
a free style, grooving, fiery
blues lurking in his heart,
mind, and soul he finally
met the right musicians to
start Jimmy Lloyd Rea and
The Switchmasters! The
band is named after his
father’s Gibson Switch-
master.
In 1981 at Blues Hat
Studio in Walla Walla,
JLR first recorded his new
band with Vince Hozier—
famed member of the
Sunrays—on lead guitar.
JLR is the recipient of
15 Cascade Blues Associa-
tion Muddy Waters awards
for best bass player. He
loved small town living,
was passionate about the
Baker City Community,
and dedicated his life to
the shariung his musical
talents with the world.
“Keep the grease in the
real blues groove” JLR.
He was a Blues Hall of
Fame Ambassador and
Board Member.
Lloyd is survived by his
wife of 43 years, Marydee
Rea; son James Lloyd Rea
III; daughter Georgene
Rea; daughters and
spouses Marianne and Dan
Stone, and Francine and
Phil O’Connell; grandsons
Griffin Stone, Gavin Stone,
Graison Stone, and Wil-
liam O’Connell; nephew
Frank Spriet Jr; niece and
spouse Robin and Todd
Chesterman and numerous
extended family members.
Lloyd was preceded in
death by his father and
mother, Darelene and
James Lloyd, Sr.; and his
sisters, Sharelene Love and
Deanna Rea.

July 6, 2015 from 10 a.m.

Oregon with family by his
side after battling against
a brain tumor.
Stephen Francis was
born on August 22, 1947
in Melrose, Massachutes to
Francis Joseph and Miriam
Gwenieve (Doucett) Sheri-
dan Jr. He was raised in
Massachutes and graduated
from Melrose High School
in 1965. After graduation,
Steve served in the United
States Marine Corps from
1965 to 1971.
Following his stint in the
service, Steve made his
way to live in Halfway,
Oregon. He worked as a
tree thinner for the Forest
Service and built his home
on Clear Creek just outside
of Halfway. Steve also
built a little cabin on that
same property near the
creek, entirely by hand,
never using a power tool.
In December of 1990
Steve married Sherry Sue
in Reno, Nevada. They
made their home in Half-
way, Oregon. Steve was an
operator for local #701 -
Operating Engineers Union
where he spent most of his
time working out of the
Eugene/Springfield, Or-
egon area. He also worked
a gold mine in Halfway
and on the Alaska pipeline.
Steve loved being with
his family and friends. He
enjoyed the outdoors, and
anything having to do with
his yard and garden. He
grew a beautiful garden
each year and canned all
kinds of fruits and vegeta-
bles. Steve took pleasure
in making wine with his
friends and doing the taste
testing to make sure it was
just right. Steve will also
be so remembered for his
awesome orange 1981
Ford pick-up truck and
his true spirit of lending a
hand to others whether it
be tilling a garden, pull-
ing a hive of bees from a
house, sharing a smile or
a story.
Steve is survived by
his wife Sherry Sue; his
daughters Kandice and
Susan; sons Mike, Richard,
Patrick; brothers Ed-
die, Kenneth and Mark;
sisters Sue and Janet and
his mother Mim and also
by grandchildren Bry-
cen, Alica, Michael and
Amanda.
He was preceded in
death by his father Frances
and son Eric; brother-in-
law Tom Schroeder.
Steve’s wishes were
that there not be a formal
service for him, but that his
remains be placed at a fa-
vorite spot in the Halfway
area, later this fall. Plans
to place his ashes will
be made in the fall. For
those who wish to make
a memorial donation in
memory of Steve, the fam-
ily suggests it be made to
the charity of your choice

Pine Creek resident shoots himself
On July 7 at 11:25 a.m.,
the Baker County Sheriff's
Office responded to 15367
Pine Creek Lane after
receiving reports from the
Oregon State Police that a
shot had been fired at the
residence. OSP detectives
were at the residence in an
attempt to contact Harry
Williams, 61, regarding
allegations of sex abuse.
Williams didn’t talk with
detectives but instead
walked to a shop where
he retrieved a firearm and
shot himself. No firearms
were discharged by Law
Enforcement. The Sheriff's
Office in conjunction with
OSP conducted the death
investigation.
Northeast Oregon
SWAT, made up of mem-
bers from Baker City
Police Department, Union
County Sheriff's Office, La
Grande Police Department
and Baker County Sheriff's
Office were requested but
the scene was rendered
safe prior to their arrival.
