Catfish cookoff follows derby
BY EILEEN DRIVER
Eileen@TheBakerCountyPress.com
The 8th Annual Catfish
Cookoff sponsored by the
Huntington Chamber of
Commerce was held Sat-
urday, May 23rd as part of
the Catfish Derby in Lion’s
Park in Huntington.
Whether one entered the
cookoff or just came down
to taste all the entries, the
cookoff was great fun.
Watching the camarade-
rie among the contestants
as well as the scramble to
finish on time and put out
good food that people will
enjoy was almost as much
fun as eating all the entries.
If a person wants to
learn the many different
ways there are to prepare
a fish, they should plan to
be there next year and be
amazed.
Contestants are judged
on taste, appearance, and
originality for catfish, as
well as Hushpuppy entries.
This year’s judges were
Craig Feero, Tyalinn Har-
rison and Christian
Matthews.
All the catfish was sup-
plied by the Chamber of
Commerce so all contes-
tants had to bring was their
cooking vessel of choice
and the rest of the ingre-
dients for their favorite
recipe.
The Prizes were: 1st
Eileen Driver/ The Baker County Press
First-place catfish cooks Claudia and Steve Stacy hold their prize plaque.
Place $100, 2nd Place $75,
3rd Place $50—plus a
plaque for each place.
There is also a People’s
Choice Award, which was
a BBQ Utensil Set and a
First Place Hushpuppy
Award of $25.
For a price of $7 for
adults and $4 for kids the
public gets a plate with
coleslaw and french fries
on it along with either lem-
onade or ice tea to drink.
Then they go from table
to table to get a sample of
each contestant’s entries.
Each entry had a differ-
ent colored toothpick stuck
in it with which individual
had cast a vote for his or
her favorite dish. Nobody
went away hungry—that
was for sure.
This year the contestants
served about twice as
many people as last year
and had a ball doing it.
This year’s top two
winners were only sepa-
rated by two points so the
competition was fierce and
ended up as follows.
First Place in Catfish by
the Judges and People’s
Choice: Steve and Claudia
Stacy. Second Place in
Catfish and First Place in
Hushpuppies, Allan and
Eileen Driver, Third Place
in Catfish Barrett Belmu-
dez.
Congratulations to the
winners.
