Velma Katherine
Semingson
Baker City,
1923-2015
Sometimes
when life
isn’t what
you want,
you are
willing to do
Velma
whatever it Semingson
takes to
make life easier. Velma
courageously opted for
a surgery that she hoped
would make life easier,
but the reality is her body
wasn’t as willing as her
heart and mind. In fact,
there were several nurses,
physicians and visitors that
remarked about Velma’s
fortitude, longevity and
sheer stubbornness.
In the end, her body
could not recover from the
surgery that she had put
so much hope in. Velma
peacefully entered into
heaven in the early hours
of Monday, April 27th,
with her great-nephew Ray
Moore at her side.
Velma was born in 1923
to William and Clara Delfs
in Lone Pine, Nebraska.
Velma was the baby of the
family. Early on Velma felt
a call to nursing.
She attended St. Al’s
nursing school and gradu-
ated in 1947. During this
time she learned much
and made many life-long
friends.
Velma continued to serve
patients in Salt Lake City
with the American Red
Cross and Grande Ronde
Hospital in La Grande.
Each of these places pro-
vided her an opportunity
to work bedside with the
patients she cherished,
many of which would rec-
ognize her at the grocery
store or bank and thank her
for her care.
Velma married Vic
Semingson in 1948 in
Twin Falls Idaho. They
lived in Salt Lake City
but moved to Baker City,
Oregon when Vic decided
to become a cattle rancher.
Although Velma didn’t
love the idea at fi rst, she
quickly grew to love the
Haines and Baker City
communities. Vic and
Velma continued cattle
ranching in the Haines area
until 2000.
Velma then moved into
Baker City and began her
second career as a volun-
teer at the Oregon Trail
Interpretive Center. It was
here she found a new call-
ing in the gift shop. She
dearly enjoyed meeting all
the families and travel-
ers who came through the
area.
When it became too
diffi cult to live on her own,
she decided to move to
Boise, Idaho to live near
family. Velma made many
friends at Wynwood, Grace
and Willow Park Assisted
Living and was so thankful
for their care.
Velma was preceded in
death by her husband, Vic
Semingson, Vic’s son Gene
Semingson, her sisters
Helen Ginther and Clara
Baker, and her brother Paul
Bolish. She is also preced-
ed by her neice Katheryn
Ginther. She leaves behind
her niece Delores and
John Johnson and family,
nephew Ron and Lani
Baker and family, her
great niece Maria and John
Kilgo and family, and her
great nephew Ray and Ga-
brielle Moore and family,
plus many special friends
all who made life worth
living for Velma.
Velma’s family would
like to thank the staff at
Willow Park Assisted
Living, the nursing staff
on the 5th and 8th fl oor
at St. Al’s, Dr. Williams,
Dr. Swerdloff the nurses
at MSTI Nampa, Mary
Aschenbrenner for the
beautiful music provided
in her last hours and all
other family and friends
who helped support Velma
during her last few weeks.
You all made us remember
the good times and make it
possible to let go.
A celebration of Velma’s
life was held at the Haines
United Methodist Church,
in Haines, Oregon at 1:00
p.m. Thursday, May 7th
2015, followed by Grave-
side Services at the Haines
Cemetery and back to the
church for a reception for
all.
Services were under the
direction of Gray’s West&
Co. Pioneer Chapel,
Baker City. Velma felt very
strongly about St. Jude’s
Children’s Hospital so
donations may be made in
her memory to St. Jude’s
through Gray’s West &
Company, 1500 Dewey
Avenue, Baker City, OR
97814.
