PICTURES OF ALASKA.
The finest example of exploita
tion by means of the panorama is
exemolified in the exhibit of the
territory at Alaska-Yukon-Pacific
Exposition. The enormous
painting has been executed un
der direction of the United Stat
es Government and is the work
of Messrs. Gates and Morange of
New York. The scenes an d lo
cal coloring occupied more than
a year in gathering.
The panorama is 150 by 40
feet in dimensions, and its per
spective and general coloring are
startling perfect. It shows min
ing opera'ions being conducted
in all branches, and the scenes
of hydraulic' and placer gold
workings, fishing, lumbering,
hunting and agriculture and ev
ry instructive feature of t'he
territory are brought close at
hand.
The fore ground leading to
the edge of the painting is made
up of real earth and rocks, and
where this gives way to the can
vas, a diminutive miner's cabin
is built.. The lighting effects
are skillfully arranged, and four
teen cluster arc lights show the
panorama to the best advantage:
These are controlled by mechan
ism so arranged, that the four
effects of dawn, noon, sunset and
night are produced. E ch of
these periods are of five minutes
duration,, and the passing of
early morn into mid-day, then
to twilight aud this followed by
the wondrous coloring of far
. northern mid-night, is beautiful
and charming in the extreme.

A Thrilling Rescue.
How BertR. Lean, of Cheney, Wash.,
was saved from a frightful death is a
story to thrill the world. "A bad cold,"
he writes, "brought on a desperate lung

not help me. Then I went to California
