too, that while there are quicker
ways deliberately to wreck a
child's health, there is no surer

GAZETTE RETURNS THANKS
The Gazette is very grateful
to its many friends for the in
terest they are taking in the
new daily, especially in the mat
ter of sending in so many news
items. This assistance is truly
appreciated and sincere thanks
are returned for these many
favors. It is hoped that such
kindness will be continued, it
being the desire of the paper to
make it as bright and readable
as possible and to print the
largest measure of the daily do
ings in Corvallis.
SAVING THE NEXT GENERATION
promise of permanent weakness
naturally follows:
, The case is cjted of a little
girl who had grown to be a hope
less "liar." She was anemic,
very delicate "nd frequently ill.
A careful examination revealed
constant fermentation in her
stomach, and this was caused
by a single crooked tooth which
prevented the grinding motion
so necessary to proper mastica
tion. The fermentation of food in
the stomach caused unnatural
nervous reflexes, which in turn
overstimulat,ed the brain and re
sulted in a disordered imagina
tion. The child "day dreamed"
and exaggerated. The straigt
ening of the tooth made her
normal in every way.
In the medical inspection of
the New York City schools, it
was' found that 30 per cent were
backward. Putting the matter
in the light of economy, the
city was wasting $3,000,000 a
year in teaching children who
were phisically unfjt to receive
an education. Examination re
vealed the fact that of the small
army of backward children over
95 per cent were "dull" because
of physical defects. And of
this considerable, almost total,
number more than 95 per cent
were changed from dullards into
normally bright scholars by
simple operaiion or - physical
treatment. '

Subscribers Should Call by Numbers to
Get Prompt Service
Call by numbers. The Independent
Telephone Company has a new direc
tory out and the same is now being dis
tributed. The directory contains a list
of all of the towns in Oregon, Washing
ton and British Columbia which may be
reached over the Independent Tele
phone line, and this list is supplemented
by a map of the Northwest coast with
the line marked thereon.
The directory proper is a complete
list of all the subscribers of the Inde
pendent Telephone Company in Benton
and Linn counties alphabetically ar
ranged, and in addition there is a busi
ness directory classified according to
the different businesses.
Among other places showinsr a con

ville, Plainview, Sweet Home, Scio,
Tangent and Peoria.
Since the directory was issued sev
eral new names have been added and
these are on a supplemental list which
occurs in the front part of the directory.
It is the mtention of the company to
furnish their subscribers each month
with a supplemental list showing new
telephones that have been added, and
also changes that have been made since
the last directory was issued. In this
even way the subscriber's directorv will ho
kept up to date. The company espec
