The deposits in the two Corvallis banks amount to $1,000,- 000. The new Commercial Club quarters, costing $5000, are the pride of the city. Tom Richardson recently made the statement that they were the best in the state outside of Portland. The Commercial Club has become especially active of ,late, and is taking steps to ward an extended publicity movement to show the advanta ges of this county, Smithson Beats World's Record NOTICE TO SUBSCRIBERS. Sadie May Tallon to W. L. Price, 5 Forest Smithson, the Olympic cham pion hurdler, lowered the world's rec ord for the, 50-yard low hurdles at Seattle last week. His time was 5 4-5 seconds, one-fifth lower than the pre vious record. -- Forest C. Smithson, Portland's world beating athlete who broke another ree ord in the big indoor ;meet at Seattle last . week, is the pride of Oregon's athletes, and best of all he is an, OAC boy. This clever performer, a Port land boy born and reared, is out to win the American record for the 120-yard hurdles this summer. He already holds the word's record for 110 meters, which he made at London last July, but the American record is accredited to Shaw, Smithson is anxious that Shaw, Johnny Garrells, Rand and other East ern cracks in this event shall coma to the A. A. U. at Seattle this summer. for he is determined to defeat Shaw and take his record away from him. Forest Smithson is the greatest hurdler the world has ever seen, and Johnny Garrells, one of Smithson's rivals for the hurdling honors, but also one of the finest young fellows in ath letics today, says Smithson is the best man he has ever met, and Garrells has defeated Shaw, the record holder, on several occasions. Smithson defeated Shaw at London, and on that ac count is entitled to claim the pre miership, for he -has never been de feated at the hurdling racing game since he came into prominence as an athlete. Smithson was sent to Seattle as the representative of the Multnomah Ama teur Athletic Club, which splendid or ganization he also represented at Lon don, and under the colors of which he will compete at all the" big meets this summer.
