it is impossible to measure the
vast benefit the institution is
conferring upon the state. To
strangle it with insufficient sus
tenance would be an absolute
blow at the welfare of the state.
To scuttle it with a referendum
of funds for which there is a
crying need would be to slap the
state's progress in the face.
There is not a citizen of Port
land, of Salem, of Ashland or of
any other part of the state but
should be alert in fostering the
institution rather than planning
to strangle it It belies Ashland
and belies Oregon for the matter
I of this referendum to be even
suggested.
The college is now organized
for an approach to perfection in
its work. It has an executive
head who is the peer of any man
in his calling in the. country.
Oregon is fortunate in having
secured a man of such power
for organization and intelligent
direction. He is in intimate
touch with the industrial forces
of the state as represented on its
tarrns, its fields and its factories,
and has the n ost intense sym
pathy with their aspiiations and
their possibilities. The 1400
students'receiving training each
year the institution are a re
cruiting nucleus for leading the
state s industrial forces into their
highest potentiality. The few
thousands the legislature has
appropriated are worth millions
to the state and its people and
will yield interest on the invest
ment a thousandfold. The senti
ment of the state is practically
unanimous in approval of this
appropriation. Can the people
of the excellent city of Ashland
afford to assume the responsibili
ty of strangling this college of
the common people?. .
The above editorial from the
Portland Journal is another evi
dence of the friendly feeling
which that paper has always
shown towards OAC and it will
certainly be appreciated by ev
ery friend of the college through
out the state.

force being all that could be desired.
This was a splendid test and shows the
efficiency of the water system.

CAN ASHLAND AFFORD IT?
The spirit behind the plan at
Ashland for holding up the agn
cultural college appropriation is
not representative of the real
Ashland. It is inisrepresenta
tive of that city and places it in
a false light before the rest of
the state. There is nowhere any
sympathy with the proposed ret'
erendum. The agricultural col
lege is everywhere known to be
in dire need of additional susten
-ance. . The demands by students
ior instruction far exceed its fa
cilities. With a greater student
attendance it has less than half
the state support accorded by
the state of Washington to its
agricultural college. Yet it is
doing a work that is hailed ev
ery where in Oregon with univer
sal approval. It is the farms
the orchards, the mines, the
shops and the other industria
phases of Oregon life that the
college is serving.
Heads of industrial establish
rnents in Portland say the grad
uates are more intelligent and any day from two to five o'clock in the
Call by numbers. The' Independent
Telephone Company has a new direc
tory out and the same is now being dis
tributed. The directory contains a list
of all of the towns in Oregon, Washing
ton and British Columbia which may. be
reached over the Independent Tele
phone line, and this list is supplemented
by a map of the Northwest coast with
the line marked thereon.
The directory proper is a complete
list of all the subscribers of the. Inde
pendent Telephone Company in Benton
and Linn counties alphabetically ar
ranged, and in addition there is a busi
ness directory classified according to
the different businesses.
Among other places showing a con
siderable list of users of the Indepen
dent Telephone Company besides Cor
vallis and Albany is Alsea, Bellf oun-
tain, Lebanon, Brownsville, Crawfords-
ville, Plainview, Sweet Soipe, Scio,
Tangent and Peoria." v
Since the directory was issued sev
eral new names have been added and
these are on a supplemental list which
occurs in the front part of the directory.
It is the intention of the company to
furnish their subscribers each month
with a supplemental list showing new
telephones that have been added, and
also changes that have been made since
the last directory was issued. In this
way the subscriber's directory will be
kept up to date The company espec
ially requests that their patrons call by
numbers instead of by names. This is
not so much on account of the. com
pany's convenience as it is for the con
venience of the subscriber and his more
prompt and efficient service- When
parties are called by names, it is fre
quently necessary for . the operator to
consult her directory ' requiring a cer
tain amount of time and thus delaying
the call. If subscribers will use the
numbers, this will be avoided and the
operator can ' get parties much more
quickly.
The directory also contains an invi
tation to all patrons to visit the office
more devoted to their work than
any to be obtained. Observers
in every part of the state are de
claring that agriculture, horti
culture and country home life
are being given vast impetus by
the young people educated an
nually at .the institution. "Its
output is a stream of expert's
flowing into the industrial life
of th-e state. No force is build
ing faster or more potentially
