Ashland Students Lack Privacy
Administrators Free To Search

Editor's Note: This is the first of
a serii-s of articles on students
rights.
Students, while attending
school do not have the right to be
secure "in their persons . . .
papers and effects" in some
cases. The administration of a
school, colleges not included,
have the right under a law called
Loco Parentis to act as a parent
would in the handling of its
students. This law pertains to not
only discipline but to the search
ing of lockers and personal be
longings. On August 21, 1972 the school
board approved an article stating
that students "are allowed to use

Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the
Moon album is a musical master
piece. Few groups have ever put
their sound together like this one.
They have a much more elec
tronic sound on this record than
on previous cuts. Three VCS-3
synthesizers are used, plus bass,
guitars, keyboards, vocals, per
cussion and tape effects. The
group consists of four men, but
six other people are used on the
album.
Side one is largely electric
sound effects, but there are some
excellent vocals also. The second
side starts off with the popular
song "Money." This song tends to

Interest Lack Wrecks Campus Clubs
Whether it is first-of-the-year
blues or total lack of interest
Ashland High School clubs are
rapidly approaching a bygone
age. '
Grizzly Knights, International
Relation League (I.R.L.) and
Quill and Scrool (which involves
the A. U.S. Journalism staff) have
not been active for approximately
ten years.
Interclub council President,
Steve Dauenhauer said that "stu
dent apathy was partly to blame
for the slump in interest."
Commenting on International
Rodent Society, Dauenhauer felt
that certain clubs were of no
value to the school.
In its consittution, members of
I R S. are asked to trim their
tails, keep their whisker length to
six inches and below and to wear
this equipment (lockers and
desks! as a convenience. The
schools insist that lockers be
properly cared for and not used
for the storage of items which are
illegal, dangerous, or possibly
disruptive to the educational
process." This article allows
lockers or desks to be searched
following a set procedure and any
unauthorized articles found to be
seized temporarily or perman
ently. "When a school official has
probable cause relating to the
safely or security, a general
search of school properties in
cluding, but not limited to,
lockers or desks may occur,"
says the search and seizure
article. However, there is a

stand apart from the others in
that it's probably the only one
that could definitely be classed as
a rock song. The other tracks are
usually pretty mellow, and they
run together in such a way that
it's often hard to tell where one
song stops and the next starts.
This album could place Pink
Floyd as one of the classic groups
of their time.

"Adequate leaders and leader
ship are necessary for a success
ful club," said Rosemary Olsen.
Olsen is presently involved in
drama club which is one of the
few active clubs on campus.
Drama Club is presently
engaged in the preparation of
producing "The Diary of Anne
Frank."
Another reason that club inter
est may be dissipating, is that
many founders, leaders and en
thused members have graduated
through the years and all that
remain is a framework which
they have built.
How to arouse more interest in
clubs is the next question.
Varsity cheerleader, Cindy
Lewis maintains that one solution
may be "for the school to give
question about what is and is not
"probable cause."
According to Principal Gaylord
Smith and Assistant Principal
Oscar Silver, only they are given
the authority to conduct a search
of a locker even though they may
give this authority to search to a
person such as a teacher, library
official, or police who has a
probable cause or need to do so.
The administration cannot only
look in a locker, but it can look
into personal effects such as coat
pockets and purses if there is
suspicion that what they are
looking for is there. Any illegal
articles found in a locker may
also be used as evidence against
the owner of the locker in a court
of law.
Mr. Silver says, "It has been
years since we have opened a
locker other than a request to the
student to show us his locker.
This," he says, "is done only once
in a while when we are looking for
a library book or football jersey
or something of that sort ahd
have a considerable amount of
evidence to support our suspi
cion." Despite their ability by
law to search through lockers and
belongings, the administration of
Ashland High keeps searches at a
minimum which shows respect
for the student.

The dawning of computer
simulations has finally reached
the AHS campus. Science teacher
John Barlow gave his thoughts
concerning the proposed science
terminal.
He said, "If a person would
have told me five years ago that
we (AHS) would be able to
simulate experiments on a com
puter, I'd probably have told
them that they were crazy."
"This simulation," as Keith Gar
ret, head of the Rogue Valley
Council on Computer Education
points out, "is not limited to
science experiments, but can be
utilized for such projects as the
stockmarket and English com
position, to name a few."

Contrary to this, Debbie Coghill
believes that "club disinterest is
just a lack of organization in the
early part of the year."

The elimination of books
sounds unreal ... no homework
assignments even more unreal.
This is how many people would
react when they first hear of a
school without a classroom ... a
teacher who comes to your home.
People call this teacher by such
names as county agent, extension
agent, and farm advisor. He
provides farmers in his county
with information about the latest
scientific finds in agriculture.
The person that likes meeting
people is the best suited for this
career. An extension agent
makes about 23 million personal
contacts annually. In addition a
person that is tactful and has an
excellent personality is good for
the job.
This is one of those careers a

For those who watched the
BBC presentation "The Six Wives
of Henry VIII" and became
interested in the characters in
volved, there is hope.
Mary M. Luke's book A Crown
for F.lizabeth looks at the human
side of history in a way that gives
the reader a feeling that he knows
all of the characters personally.
It has actual quotes from the
conversations of Henry VIII, his
wives, his children, and others. It
also contains portraits and ex
cerpts of letters these people
wrote, such as this from Eliza
beth to her brother Edward VI:
. . . And, since it is in
mind that true love consists,
which, like a god. (as it were),
is not necessarily confined by
restraints of space, I hope, nay
I am sure, that by no interval
of space or time, can I be
excluded from your good-will to
me . . .
While it is not fiction, A Croun
for Elizabeth is as exciting as any
novel. It tells a story, rather than
just listing a series of facts. The
characters become real person
alities, instead of remote, stereo
typed paper dolls. The Protestant
Jane Grey, who at sixteen was
Queen for nine days and then
person achieves in two years or
less at an agricultural college
such as Oregon State University
at Corvallis. To become a county
agent he now has to have a BA in
agricultural related field. But
persons holding a MA are being
accepted over others that have
only a BA. After a person has the
job he can expect to earn
approximately $10,000 a year. He
also receives federal employee
benefits, such as 13 to 26 days
leave.
The future of this career is
excellent. Because the Nation's
agricultural demands are
increasing rapidly . Thus the need
for a highly skilled person
knowledgeable of the demands is
met in the form of an Extension
Agent.
Haines
sentenced to death is treated with
sympathy and a certain admira
tion: The strength of Jane's own
convictions is evident in her
next words, spoken almost
saucily, that it was true they
would never meet in the next
world, "Except God turn your
heart for I am assured, unless
you repent and turn to God,
you are in evil case!"
A Crown for Elizabeth is well
written, carefully researched,
and highly readable. Although
this book is not available in the
school library, it is worth the
reader's time and effort to get his
hands on it at the Public Library.
