Lady Bears To Defend Title Bruins Seek Fifth Win
Ashland High gymnasts will
seek an unprecedented second
straight district gymnastics
championship tomorrow at the
phoenix High School gym
nasium. The Lady Bears will begin
preliminary competition at 11:30
a.m., in an attempt to retain their
1972 district crown. Medford has
surfaced as the only definite
threat to Ashland's title hopes
having just handed the girls their
first conference defeat of the
season last Friday by .62 of a
point.
The four-way meet February 23
was recognized as the title-con-
Lisa Koch, who will be replacing Cindy Wienecke on vaulting, hits a layout
vault.

The Shakespearean Meet,
hosted by Ashland High's ski
team, today and tomorrow,
w ill be the final regular season
race prior to district.
Today the Giant Slalom

this Shakespearean meet to
accumulate enough points to
qualify for the state com
petition held at Mt. Bachelor,
near Bend.
Finished Second
The ski team returned from
Lakeview last weekend with
second place honors beating
out Medford and Bend. "They
(Bend and Medford) are
really good but everyone was
falling down and it came to
whether you could get back up
and finish the course of not,"
AHS skier Susan Ivie said.
As a conference ski meet,
the Shakespearean will begin
at 10:00 a.m. both days, with
Medford trying to wrap up the
district honors.

tender's meet with Medford host
ing Ashland. Klamath Falls and
Lakeview. Several Ashland gym
nasts agreed that "we did not
have a very good day overall,
whereas Medford probably had
the best day of the whole season."
Eventhough the Lady Bears may
have had a poor day, they
managed to score a team high
21.50 points on the floor exercise
competition as both Kerry
Harder (7.0) and Sharon Hill
(6.9) received their highest
scores so far this year.
All-Around Competition
At district, Ashland will be
sporting three all-around per
formers, which, according to
Coach Betty Kimball, "scares the
other teams to death. Most of the
teams have trouble enough find
ing one all-around gymnast let
alone two or three." Harder, Hill
and Pam Hoffbuhr are the all
around gymnasts Miss Kimball
was speaking of. They will be
joined by Lisa Koch on vaulting,
Kathleen McClure on bars, Terry
McClure on beam and Cindy
Wienecke on the floor.
The Ashland Grizzlies basket
ball players have discovered
something: It's great to win.
Out to better their 4-12 record,
the Grizzlies have discovered the
use of the backboard on both
offense and defense. They hope to
employ this strategy against
Frank Roelandt's Black Torna
does as Ashland plays host to
Medford tonight.
"We've got to have more
scoring," said Grizzly coach Dick
Copple, "more productive scor
ing." Last weekend's contests
against Crater and Klamath
Falls saw Ashland do just that:
more scoring.
For the first time in 40 opposing
games, or since 1963, Ashland
beat Klamath Falls last Saturday
night.
Fast passes from forwards
Mark Wilson and Jay Coldwell to
pivot-man Vince Oredson had
initiated easy lay-in plays.
Defensively, Copple is more
worried about Medford. "We're
going to implement a full-court
press to slow them down."
"Roelandt's got a good team,"
added Copple, "but I feel we can
beat them. It'll be a tough
game we'll have to contain Paul
Weiss."
The Bruins will travel to Rose
burg tomorrow night to meet the
Tornado-whipped Indians.
Coach Copple is looking for his
juniors Don Sorensen and Jeff
Jones to carry the Grizzly load.
"Sorensen's got a good quality,"
said Copple, "he's over-aggressive.
Jeff Jones is coming on
strong too; he's really helping us
along."
Copple is proud of the way his
squad battled Roseburg last
time. "Craig Siebenlist," said
Copple, "did a fine job of piloting
the guys on the court."
"The success of tomorrow's
game," added Copple, "will de
pend if we can keep center Vince
Oredson rebounding. If we can.
He'll give Stew Robertson's boy.
Rich Parson, a run for his
money."
