Coach Dick Copple's cagers
will be out to better their last
place position this Saturday eve
ning as the Grizzlies travel to
Grants Pass for their third
meeting of the year.
The Cavemen, under the
watchful eye of coach Vern Welo,
has split with the Grizzlies in
their past two meetings this
season.
Although their 2-10 win-loss
record has been unimpressive,
Copple feels consistency is the
key to future success. "If we can
be consistent," said Copple, "we
will have a good shot at making it
into second place."
The lack of accurate shooting
by the Grizzlies has had a serious
effect on Ashland's defense. The
fast, opposing rebounds has
made it difficult for the Bears to
implement their zone defense
effectively.
With the loss of Tony Tester
man for the rest of the season, the
Grizzlies' varsity squad has been
reduced to five. A powerful
bench -prospect, Testerman is out
for the rest of the season because

Even though- the season has
been a dismal one for the team.

probably be relying of Jeff Jones
to absorb Tony's place," said
Copple.
"Because of our small varsity
squad," added Copple, "a lot of
our junior varsity kids are get
ting varsity experience. Conse
quently, a lot of them are getting
better all the time."
Ashland's varsity backcourt
consists of Craig Siebenlist and
Don Sorensen. Serving as a
protective force for center Vince
Oredson in the frontcourt are
Jay Coldwell and Mark Wilson.

possibilities. "M e d f o r ('. and
Grants Pass will fight it ct for
the district team title. . . we don't
have much of a chance at the title
but we should have several
individual champions," Brown
said of his team.
Individualists
Heavyweight Charlie Taylor
has the best shot at a individual
winner for the Grizzlies. Brown
feels Mike Reyes of Klamath
Falls will be his toughest com
petition but "Charlie should take
it."
Senior John Studebaker is
another district possibility. Stu
debaker has suffered only one
defeat all season and that was at
an unfamiliar wrestling weight of
136. "Klamath Falls has a good
130 lb. wrestler."
Rick Sinclair will also be
shooting for a individual title at
the 123 weight class. His toughest
rival will be from Grants Pass.
Also, Studebaker's younger
brother Brad will have a chance
at the 115 title. "Brad is sick right
now but you cannot count him
out," Brown said of his sopho
more grappler.
Inexperienced As A Team
"We are strong in the upper
weights but we are so inexper
ienced through the middle: 136,
141, 148, and 157," Brown said of
his overall team. Terry Ellis
(168), Ron Port wood (178), and
Taylor anchor the upper weights
while Sinclair and Brad and John
Studebaker strengthen the light
er weight classes.

Bears Out To Wax Braves
In "Four Good Quarters"
by Kevin
Hopes are running high as the
Roseburg Indians visit the Ash
land gym tonight.
The hopes are that the Ashland
Grizzlies can play four good
quarters of basketball. By play
ing these four good quarters the
Ashland five will defeat the
unbeaten Indians who are cur
rently rated second in the state.
The Bruins are entering the
game with a 2-10 season record
for the second half of Southern
Oregon Conference play. Last
week Ashland lost a heart
breaker to Klamath Falls 58-52
and a game to Medford by
thirteen points, the score being
44-31.
The Ashland crew has been
hurt by the loss of center-forward
Tony Testerman and guard
Danny Johnson. Testerman had a
blood-clot removed from his arm
and is out of action for the season.
Johnson moved to California last
week.
Happiness came to the Bruins
when senior center Vince Ored
son found himself and since then
he has played outstanding

Head coach Dick Copple stated,
"Last time we played them
(Roseburg) we played our best
offensive and defensive game. It
was probably Oredson's best
game of the year. It looks like lie
has found himself and he is doing
a good job."
