Computers Aren't Always Right
A computer evaluation of
grading at Ashland High last
quarter lists the easiest grader
in the school as Fredrick Palmer
with a 4 oo average grade. Choir
director Everett Winter is listed
second with an average of 3.93.
Third is English teacher Estel
Sohler who gave an average
grade of 3.67. Hardest grader is
U.S. History teacher Richard
Kromminga with a 2.29.
t)uestionable Results
The validity of this report,
however, is questionable because
it fails to take into count many of
the variables involved in grading.
For example. Palmer, whose
name is not widely known on
campus is an orchestra teacher
with only one student at the high
school .
Winter rates high in ease of
grading because the subject he
teaches, choir, is difficult to
judge on the academic A-F scale.
Mrs. Sohler, a teacher with
reputation as a relatively hard
grader, is evaluated only on the
nine students in her annual class.

Individualization
A new demention will be added
to the Individual Reading class as
a term program for English.
This program will divide stu
dents into special areas of inter
est concerning Fantasy, Begin
ning and advanced; Russian Lit.,
beginning and advanced; African
Lit., beginning and advanced;
Children's Lit, Literature of the
East, Existentialism, and Man
and War.
For those that have no interest
in these areas, they may read
independantly.
Other classes being offered
are: Other Places, Other Men
with Mr. Vondracek, Mythology
with Mrs. Sohler, Spring Drama
and Shakespeare with Mr.
Merryman.
Teachers involved with the new
program are: Mrs. Converse,
Mr. Brock, Mrs. McAlaster, Mr.
Kreisman and Miss Murdock.

All English grades are credited to
department head Don Von
dracek. Everything Not Considered
The computer also gives no
consideration to the types of
students enrolled in a class. For
example, Kromminga has a
relatively low grade average
because he teaches a required
subject which does not hold much
interest for many students.
Foreign language grades on the
other hand tend to run high
because of the fact that students
in that area are generally rela
tively good students and are
taking the class because they
have an interest in the area.
Average grades may be in
fluenced by many things other
than the teacher's relative diffi
culty in grading. The subject,
difficulty, number of students in
the class, and general attitude of
students all are factors which
must be considered.
The information provided by
the computer is actually n uch
better as an evaluation of the
genre of the class than it is of the
teacher's hardness in grading.
Never-the-less it makes an in
teresting comparative study.

Robert E. Howard painted a vivid
canvas in his stories of adventure
in exotic locales, such as the
earth of twelve thousand years
ago for his best-selling Conan of
Cimmeria stories.
In the worlds of Howard's
imagination, whether the scene
be Africa of the sixteenth century
as seen by the fanatical Puritan
Solomon Kane, the w ild Britain of
Bran Mak Morn as he faces the
hordes of conquering Home, or
the lluborian Age of Conan in
which dragons, wizards, and
kings live and die as one never
saw them before, anything can
happen except the tedious.
For Howard was an honest
writer; his objective, at which he
admirably succeeded, was to slap
his readers in the face with raw
entertainment s h e e r colorful
narratives of barbaric action.

Never A Dull Moment is self explanatory, because that is just
what Rod Stewart's new album contains.
The songs are all well written, lyrics as well as the musical score.
Stewart has gone out of his way to win his album gold record award.
Besides the usual guitars, piano and drums, Stewart has added a small
brass section which makes his sound even more full than usual.
The album opens with "True Blue," which contains an
overpowering guitar rhythm, as well as good lyrics. Bob Dylans's
"Mama You Been On My Mind." is also on the album and it slows
things down for a few moments until the fast-moving "Kalian Girls"
throws even more excitement into the album.
The second side starts off with Jimi llendrix's hard-driving
"Angel" which features some excellent guitar. Rod Stewart's hit,
"You Wear it Well," is probably the best song on the album as far as
having good lyrics and instrumental combined.
Never A Dull Moment is a great album for hard rock fans as well
as pop music fans.
