Harriers Continue To Win,
Will Travel To Gilchrist
The state champs are back
The Grizzly cross-country team
handily defeated eight other
teams at the Crater Invitational
Meet September 9. The following
Saturday they placed first at the
Lost River Invitational in Malm.
Coach Bob Julian admitted,
"We could not tell much from the
Crater meet," since it was the
first meet of the season and the
competition was none too diffi
cult. "I was expecting a stronger
Medford team," Julian added.
The Tornadoes placed third with
111 points compared to the
Grizzlies' 41.
Julian is waiting for the
confrontations with Klamath
Falls and the 16 teams in the
Gilchrist Invitational to finalize
any judgment of this year's
competition. As of now he
predicts tough challenges
throughout the district, especial
ly Klamath Falls, Grants Pass
and Koseburg.
With Tom McDowell, Bill
McPherson and Claude Neuen
schwandcr all graduating last
year, some dim hopes appeared
but with the added depth of the
team this year, optimism has
grown rapidly.

AHS Football Goes North;
Held Sunset Scoreless, 13-0
On scoring runs of 7 and 32
yards, Craig Siebenlist lead the
Ashland Grizzlies over Sunset
13-0.
Displaying both a running
game and an aerial attack, the
Grizzlies amassed a total yard
age of 2X3 yards. After running
for 65 yards and throwing for
another H3. Siebenlist proved to
be the star as radio announcer
Ron Hollow ay interviewed him
on the post game wrap-up show.
It was Ashland's defense that
gave Siebelist the ball in good
field position most of the game.

Crater, has assumed the number
one position this season. At the
Comet cross-country course he
defeated the second place man by
more than 20 minutes.
Sophomore Mark Farrel placed
12th on the same course, surpris
ingly beating Jay Holland by
one-tenth of one second, 13:48 to
13:49 respectively. Holland
should be challenging Studebaker
by midseason. With only a week's
practice under his belt he was not
quite in shape for the season
opener.
Rounding out the varsity squad
via their performances at Crater
are: Fred Sears (13:27), Dan
Morgan (13:38), Jim Troutman
(14:15) and Wayne Morgan
(14:17).
The junior-varsity team also
triumphed in its opening meet.
Mark Simmons lead the Grizzlies
with a second place performance
of 14:46. The top five finishers for
AHS included Simmons, Mike
Neuensch wander (14:54), Roy
Reeder (14:56), Lee Cook (14:58)
and Steve Haptonstall (14:59).
Yesterday's performance in
Lithia Park against Klamath
Falls and tomorrow's invitational
meet at Gilchrist should tell the
tale of the Grizzlies success this
year.
recovery and Dan Johnson's
interception, the defense turned
back numerous Sunset scoring
attempts.
The most notable being a hard
goal-line stand early in the fourth
quarter. The Grizzly defensive
stalwarts held off the Apollos on
four successive downs inside
their own 10 yard line.
