SPORTS Bruins Place Fourth At State
Girls' Track
The eight girl contingent rep
resenting AHS at the Oregon
State AAA Track and Field Meet.
May 19-20 returned home with 11
points and four medals.
Pam Hoffbuhr led the Grizzlies
in scoring with 10 points. She
placed third in the high jump
clearing 5-2. Linda Ganzini
(Roseburg) defeated defending
state champion Charlene
Schwanz (Bend) for the title at
5-3 on fewer misses.
Hoffbuhr also placed in the 100
meter hurdles. She competed
against State Record holder,
Heidi Davidson (Churchill) con
ference rival. Ganzini, Jo Ras
mussen (Sunset) and Mary
Off icier (Madison). Hoffbuhr
completed the race in fourth
position with a time of 15-4.
The Grizzly long jump duo of
Julie Davies and Terry McClure
tied for sixth place to complete
Ashland's team total. Mrs. Fran
Sichting (Marshfield), State
Record holder, easily captured
the title with a leap of 18-5.
Hoping to jump 20 feet, Sichting
felt she had a sub par day. Davies
Athletes Earn
Baseball Honors
With their selections to the
all-conference baseball team,
Mike Bruce and Mark Wilson
capped successful individual
seasons.
Playing left field and sporting a
league leading .456 batting
average, Mike Bruee was no
surprise in the all-conference
balloting. Bruce lived up to his
post-season awards by collecting
five hits in a pair of all-star
games against Klamath Falls.
: A late-season batting slump
didn't seem to bother Mark
Wilson's selection to the all-conference
outfield. Wilson's aver
age dipped to .365 after a slow
finish but his torrid hitting for the
rest of the season impressed
Southern Oregon coaches.
Also being honored for their
efforts this past season were Bill
Fagan, Gary Sargenti, Mike
Archambault, and Fritz Lag
ergren. All four were accorded
Honorable Mention billing.

Charity Wood was the only
representative of the field events
from Ashland. She had an
off-day, possibly from the pres
sure of participating in a State
meet. Unable to clear the 100 foot
mark for the first time this
season. Wood tossed the javelin
98-10. Her best throw of the year
would have easily placed her in
the top six finishers.
What always happens to un
defeated relay teams? they get
beat. The 440 relay team of
Hoffbuhr, Kathy Johnson, Sharon
Hill and Ellen Reynolds suffered
two costly hand-offs. Even
though their hand-offs were poor,
they missed entering finals by
only two one-hundredths of a
second. Having had better hand
offs the Grizzly contingent could
have hardily defeated the win
ning team from Sunset who
clocked an unspectacular 51.5.
Overall, it was a much im
proved showing compared to
Ashland's team total of .5 scored
last year.
Mark Wilson batted .365 this
season.

Nine Grizzly trackmen ad
vanced to the OSAA State Class
AAA Boys Track and Field Meet
held at Hayward Field in Eugene.
Their efforts at State resulted in
23 points and a fourth place team
trophy to share with Medford.
Although he set a personal best
of 4:15.7, Claude Neuenschwan
der was unable to overtake Gary
Barger (St. Helens) in the
one-mile run. Steve Wilson
(Bend) opened a sizable margin
in the third lap which Neuen
schwander was unable to make
up at the finish leaving him in
third place.
Hugh Huck had a sub par day,
being eliminated quite early in
the competition. He could not
clear the opening height of 12-9.
Craig Brigham (South Eugene)
set a new state record of 16-4 to
win the event. Brigham at
tempted to break the national
record of 16-7 but after placing
second in both the shot put
(57-6' 4) and discus (182-11) and
winning the high jump (6-8) he
was beginning to tire. He missed
all three of his attempts at 16-8'2.
Larry Toney failed to qualify
for the finals in the 440 yard dash,
after running a personal best of
50.3 at the district meet. Dave
Hagmeier (Jackson) set a new
state record by becoming the
first Oregon Prep track star to

Scott Studebaker ran a per
sonal best of 9:27.62 in the
two-mile run. His effort placed
him fifth as teammate Bill
McPherson placed fourteenth but
still cut his previous best mark to
9:53.0.
Mark Wilson, leading scorer
for the Grizzly state contenders,
placed fifth in the 100 yard dash
and third in the 220 yard dash.
The 100 was an extremely close
race with two-tenths of a second
separating first and sixth place
finishers. Having practiced for
about two weeks, Wilson made a
