PAGE SIX ROGUE NEWS Fri . May 19. 1972 Vondracek Discusses Contraversial Issues The fourth in a series of articles in which teachers express their personal opinion. In this issue Mr. Don Vondracek, English teacher, is featured. Q: What is your opinion on sex education in public schools? A:' In an era of overpopulation and venereal disease epi demics, sex education would seem to be vital. in your student- Q: Describe what is. opinion, the ideal teacher relationship. A: Ideally, students and teach ers should see each other as partners in learning with the teacher's greater cxpericene and background as the only signifieant differentiating fac tor. In fact, however, as long as the teacher must take roll and give grades, no such re lationship is possible. Q: Are you primarily interested in helping college-bound stu dents or in preparing students for life in the non-academic world? A: I understand the attitudes and assumptions of college bound students in a way that inclines me. unless I am very careful, to favor them . . . When I think about it, I know that everyone should not go to college, but at the gut-level I want an academic, liberal arts education for everyone. Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea mixama culpa. Q: What do you think of today's youth, their ability to cope with world problems, their sincerity and idealism? A: They are slightly more social ly conscious than my peers of . the apathetic generation, but the turning toward the occult and the superstitions (Tarot cards, astrology. Eastern re ligions, drugs, "Jesus freak ism," etc.) would seem to make the present generation less capable of handling the problems they perceive. Q: Would you like to teach in a free or open school? A: I think my ego would be strong enough, but without the support of the system and its role-reinforcing aspects, I'm not certain I would be comfortable when I and my efforts were ignored, de meaned, insulted, etc. I would like to try it, but I'd want the security of a traditional school to return to.
