Bear Cindermen Show Promise;
Hay Retain The District Trophy
Ashland cindermen defend
their district crown at Klamath
Falls, May 19 20. The Southern
Oregon Conference District meet
will probably produce many new
records on the Pelicans rubber
ized asphalt track. With good
performances from all members
of the team and a continued effort
by the distance crew, AHS may
have another district track
trophy in her possession.
The 440 relay team of Craig
Sichcnlist. l.arry Toney, Ted
McDowell and Al Lord will
compete against a favored Crater
contingent of Thorn. Sills. Rogers
and Bartley. The Cornel's relay
team has recorded the third
fastest time so far this year in
Oregon prep track. Med ford and
Scott Studebaker ran a 9:48.0
twomile run during the Shake
speare Meet. May 13. The time
was good for first place.
Grants Pass have also shown
good 4 to relay teams.
The mile will be up to such
distance runners as Bill McPher
son. Claude Neuenschwander,
Scott Studebaker, and John Butt.
Neuenschwander has the second
best mile time in the state, 4.17,
next only to Gary Barger of St.
Helens. Barring any upsets or
mishaps, these two top milers
will vie for the title in state
competition. May 26-27.
The Grizzlies have been at a
loss for sprinters to equal or
compensate for the talents of
Steve Mclntyre tMedford) Larry
Kogers (Crater) and Bob Thorn
(Crater). Mclntyre has recorded
the fastest prep mark in the too
this year with a 9.6. Rogers and
Thorn are capable of breaking
10.0.
A glimmer of hope has ap
peared with mark Wilson who has
asked to practice and participate
in the district meet. After
completing the baseball season,
Wilson will work out for the 100
and 220 yard dashes. Last year he
was Mclntyre's principal rival.
Tom McDowell, Toney and
Lord are the Bears hopes for
victory in the 440. McDowell has
one of the top three times in the

a second behind Oliver Spires'
( Klamath Falls) prep best of 49.5.
High hurdles will be run by
Scott Toll, Ted McDowell and
Kim Laird. They must compete
against such hurdlers as Tom
Bartley of Crater and Mike
Chriss of Medford. Both Bartley
and Toll have recorded 14.6 but in
recent competition Barley has
come out ahead of Toll. They
have two of the top prep times
this year for the 120 high hurdles.
Bartley also has the top 1K0 low
hurdles time in the state (19.9).
Ted McDowell and Siebenlist will
represent Ashland in that event.
McDowell's best time was 21.0.
The Grizzlies show promise in
the 8X0 yard run with Tom
McDowell and Jay Holland both
breaking the 2:00.0 barrier.
McDowell set a new school
record and also put himself into
the list of top prep best for the 880
by recording a 1:55.5 in the
half-mile.
Two-mile is another job for,
who else, but the Grizzly distance
crew. Scott Studebaker defeated
Neuenschwander at the Shake
spear Meet. They will probably
team up with McPherson to run
the eight-lapper at district.
The mile relay has showed
improvements, by. defeating
Crater with a time of 3:26.0 but
Medford has the team to beat at
district. The state has produced
several relay teams recording
3:23 so they must improve a bit
more to have another shot at the
stale title which they acquired
last year.
Roseburg, perennially strong
in the field events, and Medford
with Mike Richey, will be likely
opponents for Ashland's weight
man. The Grizzlies' Kevin Litwiller
(14-3U) and Hugh Huck (13.6)
Al Lord w ill represent AHS in the
410 vard dash al the district meet
in Klamath Falls, this weekend.

Meet, be in the thick of the
competiton for the title.
Jeff Bradford (Klamath Falls)
and Toll have been favored to
dominate the high jump but with
Dave Friday's (Crater) upset
defeat of both men, there are
more upset possibilities. Toll is
having his problems and has not
been able to clear 6-0 lately.
Bradford, too, is having a
let-down. He has jumped the
highest of anyone in the state this
year, 6-6' t, but at the Shake
speare meet he was not up to par.
Long jump hopefuls include
Lord, Rob Pardee and Wilson.
Kevin Litwiller cleared I-3xn,
with this jump. The height is a
new school record. I'nahle to get
off of the pole, Litwiller missed a
jump at 11-6.
