Students Work As Aides Julie Harrison "I think it's a really effective program." commented Wally Vait. referring to the teacher aide program in Ashland elementary schools. Wally spends his first and second periods as a teacher's aide in a sixth grade class at Walker School. The program actually began last year with aides in the math, foreign language and other departments within the high school. This year it expanded to include Kellview and Walker Schools. Presently. 19 high school students are in these elementary schools two periods a day helping individual students to overcome problems. According to vice-principal Mr. Bud Silver, the program was initiated because high school students are beginning to "show more interest in other people around them" and it was found that similar teacher's aide pro grams in other areas had worked "moderately well." Iteing a teacher's aide is a particularly good experience for students interested in any form of social work or teaching. Any student with sufficient interest and transportation to either Itcllview or Walker mav he an elementary teacher's aiile. As a course, serving as a teacher's aide is graded only pass or fail with credit given for passing. Silver described the program as "a low pressure type of situation" with few rules. The aide's activities are negotiated between the elementary teacher and the aide himself with little intervention from the high school. "Basically. I'm on my own," Wally explained, "there's not much busy work." Because he is closer to the elementary stu dents' own age than is the teacher. Wally feels he is "not so much of an authoritative figure" and that he can "show them instead of teach them."
