Ashland's baseball team came alive Saturday, thumping Rose burg in both ends of a twinbill 7-3 and 8-4. The Grizzly hero in the first game was winning pitcher Mike Archambault. In the process of striking out nine Indians Archambault contributed a three run triple which put the Grizzlies ahead 5-3. A team effort in the top of the seventh added two more runs for the Grizzlies. Mike Bruce, Bill Fagan, and Mark Wilson each collected two hits to bolster the Grizzly attack. With Bruce jumping on the second pitch of the second game for a long home run and a quick 1-0 lead, Ashland appeared to be JPORT Awards Banquet Acknowledges Athletes in command. Leading 3-0 into the third frame the Grizzlies were looking forward to a double header sweep. Roseburg had different ideas. The Indians retaliated with a little artillery of their own as they jumped to a 4-3 lead before the Grizzlies could shut down the Roseburg guns. Down 4-3, the Grizzly guns reloaded and came out firing for five big runs in the top of the sixth. Roseburg could not over come the Grizzly barrage with the Ashlanders coming out on top of an 8-4 decision. Girls track has produced an undefeated 440 yard relay team vying for a school record. Kathleen McClure has tied Pam Hoffbuhr's previous school high jump record of 5-234. Julie Davies has broken two school recoreds : 100 meter hurdles (153 and long jump U6-5! Wilson collected four hits, Gary Sargenti three, Archambault three, and Bruce two to pace Ashland's 13 hit attack. Most inspirational athlete of the year, Claude Neuenschwend er, was presented with his award at the Winter Sports Banquet, April 17, sponsored by the KCMX radio station and the Ashland Booster Club. Keith Wentela received a $200.00 scholarship and Mark Wilson was awarded most outstanding athlete at the after dinner presentations. (uest speakers were Andy Mauer, offensive lineman for the professional football Atlanta Fal cons, and F.rnie McKee, West l.inn coach. Mauer reminisced a game in which he was pitted against Oakland defensive line man Ben Davidson. He pointed out a necessity to "find your talent" and "never be just mediocre." McKee stressed con fidence and discipline as well as faith and fellowship. Kven though their record did not show it, the basketball team made several improvements. Defense, the most significant achievement, allowed Grizzly opponents an average of only SO points per game compared to an 80 point average last season. Awards for basketball included Scott Toll, highest rebounders, with 238 for the season; Wilson, highest scorer with 383 points and most valuable player; Wentela, most inspirational; Vince Ored son, most improved; and back court man, Craig Siebenlist, received the hustle award. Larry Walter, presented with the hustle award, and Joe Sutton, most improved, were the repre sentatives for the Grizzly wrest ling team at the State Meet this year. Most inspirational went to Randy Litwiller while Jim Dur bin received the most valuable wrestler award. The District Six Gymnastics Champions, coached by Betty Kimball and Patricia Selby. were presented with their district medals. Preceding their awards, Ms. Kimball spoke of the girls' hard work and devotion from October to March. They practices "under a difficult situation" due to lack of equipment and space.
