Summer Session
SOC Plans Workshops
Vocational Training Available
Graduating Seniors will be
interested to know that Southern
Oregon College will be offering a
1972 summer session.
Students interested in enrolling
should apply for admission
through the SOC office of
admissions as soon as possible.
This applies especially to new
students who must establish a
personnel file at the college.
The summer session this year
will consist of three parts. A
week-long "pre-session" begin
ning June 12, a "regular session"
June 19 to August 1 1, and a "post
session" August 16-25.
In addition to the courses
presented during the "pre",
"post" and "regular" sessions,
which will also be available in the
fall term, there will be several
seminars and workshops.
It is possible for high school
students, other than graduating
seniors, to attend some of these
workshops and seminars. Special
permission would be required
from the school principal.
The summer session is valu
able to students in several ways.
There are no academic prerequi
sites for the session. A student
may enroll, regardless of his high
school grades. By completing at
least 9 credit hours with a C
average or better, a student
becomes eligible for enrollment
at SOC despite his high school
CPA.
By attending consecutive sum
mer sessions, an undergraduate
can complete work for a bacca
laureate degree in three years,
rather than four.
Cost of the summer session for
the entire three terms will be $169
for undergraduates. Tuition for
the workshops begins at $59.
High school underclassmen
who enroll in workshops or
seminars will receive college
credit for them. Not all of the
workshops will be open to high
school students. Some will be too
advanced because they are
directed at teachers and other
advanced students.
Rogue Community College was
established in November, 1970,
because, as its president says,
"Josephine County felt a need for
a vocational-technical college."
The college is located in Grants
Pass.
Primary emphasis of Rogue
Community College is to have a
comprehensive program with an
emphasis on vocational-technical
education. "Comprehensive"
means that the college will offer
vocational-technical subjects, the
first two years of lower division
college training, short term
courses for special vocational
groups, basic education for those
who have had their education
interrupted and an intensive
program of counseling and
guidance.
The vocational-technical areas
of the college include: Industrial
Mechanics, Welding, Auto, Busi
ness Education, Wood Industries,
Food Service, Fire Science,
Agriculture, Early Childhood
Education, Homemaking, Far
rier Program, Law Enforcement,

Lower division transfer courses
are in the areas of : Art, Business,
English, Mathematics, Physical
Education, Science and Social
Science.
There are I.0K5 students en
rolled at RCC with a full-time
equivalency, of 410. Student
teacher ratio would be hard to
measure because of the variety of
programs, but traditionally com
munity colleges have smaller
class sizes than the four year
colleges. At the present time, the
college employs 23 full-time in
structors and 44 part-time in
structors. The reason -for the
number of part time instructors,
Henry O. Pete, the president,
says, "is so that we can get
specialists in occupational
areas."
Less social activity and em
phasis on athletics is found in
community colleges compared to
four-year colleges. RCC has an
"extensive" physical education
and intramural program, but no
interschool athletic program.
Pete says that "the only
requirement for entrance is the
desire and ability to learn." High
school graduation is needed if it is
desired to transfer subjects to a
four-year college.
Pete also says that "we always
welcome an opportunity to tell
about our college, especially
when you make specific re
quests." The address of Rogue
Community College is 3345 Red
wood Highway, Grants Pass,
Oregon, 97526. RCC's telephone
number is 479-5541.
