Baseballer's Ready
No Progress In Council
Brian Almquist, Ashland's City Administrator, discussed major
problems facing Ashland as it grows in the opening seminar.
Ashland's major problem is economic. It costs the city $150,000
more every year to offer the same services. This is due to inflation and
the rising cost of living.
This means that the city must raise at least that much more
money every year in order to "break even."
City's Source of lie venue
Most of the city's revenue comes from utility rates. Ashland buys
electrical power wholesale and sells it to residents at the same price as
surrounding communities. The profit goes into a fund for the city. This
is Ashland's major source of income and accounts for 30 per cent of the
income.
City's Financial Undertakings
Robert Nelson, Finance Director, discussed Ashland's financial
undertakings. This area is a crisis for local governments, and Ashland
is no exception. It is costing more money to maintain the same
services which are more in demand.
"Active Park" Proposed
"Parks are for people" was Garth McGurie's major point as
Recreation Director. Ashland's major need in this area is an "active
park" to augment Lithia Park's tranqul atmosphere. This need would
be filled by the proposed Hunter Park, which would offer outdoor
basketball, baseball, shuffleboard, and other activities.
The major problem facing the Parks & Recreation people is
vandalism. This helps no one because it wastes money which could be
used to develop new facilities.
Lack of Police Facilities
Allen Alsing. Public Works Director is responsible for maintaining
streets, storm drainage, and enforcing building codes. This becomes
more difficult as more facilities are required for a greater population.
Police Chief Herb Hays gave a statistical look at the force. His
major complaint was the "inadequate facilities."
Fire Chief William Reed rounded out the presentation with the
aims of the Fire Department. These include, to rescue imperiled lives,
save property, extinguish fires, and conduct public safely work.

Ashland High School's baseball
team opens practice this week
with an optimistic view towards
the upcoming season.
Coach Arlan Foote's baseball -ers
appear to be full of talent on
paper. Two transfers, three
returning starters, a former
trackster and some experienced
Legion players are reasons for
optimism.
Mike Bruce and Mike Archi
bald are a pair of transfers with
impressive credentials. Bruce
was a .400 hitter last year in a
Connie Mack league in Georgia.
He also doubles as a pitcher.
Archibald is a hard-throwing
pitcher who doubles as an
infielder when not pitching.
Charlie Lewis, Bill Fagan and
Alan Tinker all return from last
year's team with Ix-w is receiving
the most improved player award.
Fagan and Tinker both played
American Legion Ball last sum
mer. Mark Wilson, former trackster,
was a .4:10 hitter last summer in
Legion ball. He has decided to
turn in his track spikes for a pair
of baseball cleats this spring.
