V.r.i SOC Student Explains Offer To Serve As Narcotics Agent Siskiyou Southern Oregon College ovember 19, 1971 The following interview concerns a SOC student who was asked to serve as a nar cotics agent. The student who was ap proached has .chosen to re main anonymous. He feels that if his name and sources of information were released it would be a social and ec onomic disadvantage. He told this interviewer: "I hove a lot of friends in the valley and I would like to seek employment here after graduation. It's mainly for these two reasons I chose to withold this information." INTERVIEW: Q: Were you approached to do undercover work on cam pus drug traffic? A: STUDENT: Yes, I was approached by a person seek ing what he called '"friendly help." He inferred that with his experience and my back ground we could do a lot in the area of curbing drug traf fic. Q: Was this person a stu dent? A: STUDENT: He was a student and a member of a LADIES SPORTSWEAR Fart suits Sweaters Slacks Blouses Scarves 2-$4 Monday-Sat. 10a.m. -6p.m. in the Ashland Shopping Center GiaMT 1448 Ashland St. (next to Timber's Motel) Now Open MONDAYS by populardemand Monday Only Special- HAM, SAUSAGE baconOO? He wanted me to keep him posted on people buying and selling drugs in the area. He felt that be cause of my life-style, it would be much easier for me to get this type of informa tion. He found himself very out of place with his short hair and "straight" appear ance. The approach used wasn't as obvious as I'm making it sound. Every thing was much more subtle but there was no doubt a bout what he was implying. Q: Did you cooperate? A: STUDENT: "NO WAY"! Q: Did you know the campus wos being used for recruiting informers? A: STUDENT: I had heard a few rumors but before this happened I thought they were j ust gossip. I don't think this person was working dir ectly for the police force be cause he indicated that the information I would give him would be of a personal nature. Q: Even if it were for his own personal information, wouldn'r he be able to use i - ' it in his profession. A: STUDENT: That's true. Q: Whot do you know about the existence of a student dr ug list? A: STUDENT: There have been rumors of what you might call "known drugus ers." I feel the only way he could have gotten my name is through such a file. I think if there is such a list it's probably a j oint venture between city, county and campus authori ties. Q: How would you suspect they would acquire names for such a list? A: STUDENT: I'm sure there are many instances in which people have cooper ated. It seems there are people who ore more than willing to be "MOD SQUAD ERS" ond rat on their friends Q: How do you feel about this type of detection? A: STUDENT: I seriously question acquiring informa tion in this manner. Using one person against another this way is appalling. It shows me a real decline in human trust. It's the "Big Brother" approach and it's sickening. GiAhlT Steak & Eggs all dav every dav ... .
