Jan. 21, 1972 Soph Gymnast Feels Hopeful "Because it's a way to express oneself maybe that's why more and more girls are beginning to turn out for gym nastics," sophomore gymnast Kim Knudson's explained. Mis Knudson, who is competing for her second year, in floor exercises which include a combination of tumbling and ballet, prac tices throughout the summer. When asked in regard to her season expectations Kim commented "I won't really know until after the first meet, but I think I'll do better than last year." The hopeful gymnast feels that she could improve on"every thing." She has yet to de cide on whether she will pursue gymnastics in college or later years, though she feels there is a possibility. Sophomore gynast Kim Knudson is in her second year of gymnastics and Mill be com peting in the floor exercises which include tumbling and ballet. Sophomore skier Rob Cope in his second year of participating on the Ashland High School Ski team plans lo race both giant slalom and slalom racing this year on the High School Ski Team. l.KillTUKK.HT WRESTLFR JIM DL'RBIN captured second place at the district meet last year. Wrestling Coach Tim Itrown says "Jim should place high at state this year." Durbin has wrestled since eighth grade. He practices two hours a day. Last summer he participated in the summer wrestling program. He is pre sently in the 106-pound weight class, but plans to drop down to the 98-pound weight class for the district meet. Durbin likes the lighter weight classes because the wrestlers tend to be inexperienced under classmen. Durbin would like to improve his agility. He would like to wrestle in college, and hopes to obtain a scholarship. "He is an outstanding young man and should place high at the state tournament," commented Coach Brown. Sophomore Skier To Race Varsity As a freshman. Rot Cope only raced in the var sity ski team once, as a slalom rarer. However, this season he plans to race var sity in giant slalom and sla lom, and down hill only once at Bend. Cope has been skiing for nine years. He stated that he likes skiing as it provides a challenge not of fered by other sports. l-ast year he raced Nastar at Mt. Ashland. He received a gold, a silver, and a bronze medal for high performances. He had a handicap of 25. I like Nastar because you compete against your self and nobody else," he commented. "1 think skiing is fun because you test your skills against the mountain and snow." Rob plans to pursue skiing in college or after as a hobby. ; 1 ".: Coach Rrown feels Durban should place at State this year. Glossop Plays Junior Varsity Playing junior varsity this season is Jeff tllossop. "Jeff will split his time between varsity and junior varsith this season, re marked Coach Kromminga. Last season Jeff averaged 17 points a game as a sophomore guard. He practices two and a half hours a day and says he is happy with the position he plays. He plans to play basketball in college but says playing profes sionally is doubtful. v -sr 4 MX&si J.V. basketballer Jeff Glossop should see varsity competition this season.
