"Incredible Creeping Chair"
The wterbed, b it is
known today, was conceived
by designer Charles Prior
Heck about two years ago.
Heck's first creation was
the "Incredible Creeping
Chair." It consisted of
300 pounds of liquid starch
in a vinyl skin. When one
sat in it, the chair would
"creep" around the in
dividual. The "Chair" did not
sell too well. Heck contin
ued to work with this basic
idea experimenting with
such materials as Jell-o.
Heck discovered that Jell-o

Unusual Sensations
"Waterbeds give a per
son the sensation of weight
lessness." This sensation
is not true weightlessness
and, consequently, will not
produce any of the adverse
effects of zero-g. The worst
problem would be for the
giddy, who might suffer from
seasickness.
The feeling of lack of
weight can be better de
scribed as floating. The
ancient principle which
keeps the largest slii ps a

Some people aren't interested
in putting a shoulder to the
wheel-all they want to do is get
their hands on it.
The lack of pressure points
on the body allows the body
to relax better. This leads
to a more comfortable rest
with less tossing and turn
ing. A quality waterbed is
Virtually indestructable.
Even if the bed is punc
tured, it will not "flood"'
the bedroom. The liner will
contain most of the water
and the worst that can hap
pen would be a si ow leak.
Many Models
An almost unlimited
number of waterbed models
are available. They start
with the twenty dollar water
bag which most anyone can
afford. The ul timate water
bed costs about $2,800 and
includes a custom frame,
heater, reading light, clock,
bar, hi-fi, ond a TV that is
guaranteed to show old
movies which will put the
chronic insomniac to sleep.
Black Art of Voodoo
Rises in Popularity
By I'atti Phelan and Robin Arnold
Voodoo, like other forms of magic is acquiring a rising popularity.
Books on witchcraft abount on supermarket stands.
Developed by the slaves of Haiti about 2(10 years ago, voodoo is a
conglomeration of African, West Indian and Roman Catholic religions.
Spirits known as LOA play a key role in voodoo ceremony. A voo
dooist when possessed by a LOA. can use its supernatural power to
serve his own ends.
Since voodooists of Haiti are usually practicing Roman Catholics,
loa bear a vague relationship to saints.
There are over 200 loa in voodoo. Among them are leqba, protector
of the home; Agqz, patron of the sea and sailors; Zaka, guardian of
crops; and Baron Samed, lord of death and graveyards.
Candles play an important part in voodoo rituals. Each color has its
own significance. A pink candle attracts love. Blue is for money,
(ireen drives off evil. Red brings victory. White is for peace. Black
candles are burned for evil purposes.
Voodoo ceremony often employs black cats, snakes, blood drinking
and sexual orgies in combination with Roman Catholic liturgy and
sacrament.
Voodoo exists in many forms. First developed by primitive peoples
to explain that which Christianity ignored certain aspects of it have
been expanded or omitted to suit other purposes. For this reason, it is
often considered a type of black magic.

Lithium Creates Elixir
Ashland's Lithia Water
contains the second largest
concentration of Lithium in
the world. This fact may not
cause anyone to fall out of
their seat today, but 70 years
ago, everyone was excited
about it.
Proposals were made
to turn Ashland into a health
resort. Plans were made to
pipe Lithia Water through
out the city. A bond issue
was passed which alloted
over $200,000 to construct
pipelines and fountains.
Lithia Water was piped
to the park, which now bears
the water's name, the rail
road depot, the plaza, the
public library, and several
hotels, including the Lithia
Springs Hotel (now the Mark
Antony).
The big day finally
came when the fountains
would open. The Southern

as "Ashland Grows, While

for the event.
The enthusiasm soon
died out, along with the
money. Most of the
origional facilities deter
iorated because of lack of
maintenance. Part of the
reason for the lack of
interest was the outbreak
of World War I.
There were several at
tempts to bottle this natural
elixer as a "table water",
some of which were
relativel y successful. Othe
uses for the woter, such as
using the excess carbon

ice for local firms, were
found.
