opponents this year. Players

Scott Toll, 6'8"; Vince Oredson,
6'5"; Kerry Keeton, 6'4"; Keith
Wentela, 63"; and Mark Wilson,

Coach Richard Copple
commented that "we are going
to have an outstanding year . . .
We have five returning
lettermcn: Kerry Keeton, Craig
Siebenlist, Scott Toll, Keith
Wentela, and Mark Wilson . . .
The turnout should be from 20
to 30 players."
Gymnasts Conditioning
The girls' gymnastic team has
been conditioning for the last
month. There are 25 to 30 girls
participating in gymnastic this
year. Thus, there will also be a
Junior Varsity team.
Wrestling Upcoming

should be tough!" commented
Mr. Jerome Iliggins. The team
depends on the progress of the
sophomores.

Grizzlies Wrap Up Season Against Bedford
By Pat Overand
Coach Lance Locke will be
looking for his second win in
three starts against Medford
when his Grizzlies collide with
the Black Tornado on Walter
Phillips Field tonight.
Since taking over the head
coaching job two seasons ago
Coach Locke's charges have
amassed 40 points against
Medford while holding the Big
Wind to 21. Unfortunately all 21
come last season in the final
quarter of an otherwise all
Ashland game when the Tornado
came from behind to nip the
Grizzlies 21-20 and went on to
take the state A-l high school
runner-up slot.
Ashland Has History of
Humiliating Medford
The year before probably
stands out as the biggest game
for the Grizzlies, however.

Intramural Ends
"The turnout was good for
the first attempt at an
intramural basketball program.
The interest was high
through-out and the competition
was at its best." commented
Coach Richard Copple.
45 students and five faculty
members participated in this
program. The program was
developed to condition those
interested in basketball. Copple
and Arlan Foote directed the
activities.
of a backfield consisting of four
all conference selections
homestanding Ashland
humiliated the Black Tornado
20-0.
Unfortunately, the Grizzlies
faltered the second half of the
season and Medford again went
on to take the Conference, and
eventually the State
championship.
If Ashland is to win, it will
have to break through a defense
that has limited opponents to an
average of one touchdown
per game while containing a
balanced offense that has the
running of fullback Mike Ritchie
(6.2 yards per game), Shawn
McLaughlin (S.l average) and

quarterback Jeff Jones who,
scrambling from the pocket, has
compiled a 4.6 average per carry;
and add the passing of Jones to
Ted Pappas and Chuck Bartlett,
among others. There is little
doubt as to why Medford is
currently rated number one in
the state prep poles.
But, as shown by the previous
two years' scores, records so far
this year by either team really
have no bearing when these two
teams meet. A strong rivalry is
always present. Even the
community acknowledges the
Medford game "as the big one".
As long as five weeks ago
Ashland merchants produced the
Tornado soup can filled with
state air and loose marbles to
shake at the Medford game.
In addition, Ashland's record
is not a true indication of the
team's strength. In various
games, specific aspects of the
Grizzlies' game have been
impressive, but they have yet to
really put it all together. In
several pre-conference games
Keith Wentela passing to Mark
Wilson, Dan Phillips, Mike
Testerman and Bill Fagan has
been particularly potent. But
lately it has been lacklustre. Al
Lord, Andy Lonch, and Larry
Toney at running backs likwise
have been sporadic, with Lord
seeing limited action due to
injuries.
