Grizzlies Slip Up In Big Game
The Ashland Grizzlies with a
4 and 2 record will attempt to
advance their winnings to 5 and
2, when they play the Klamath
Falls Pelicans tonight in K. Falls.
The mighty Bears seem
determined to conquer the game
with this weeks practices
concentrated on timing and
quickness.
Last Friday, Homecoming,
the Grizzlies hosted the Grants
Pass Cavemen, only to be
disappointed with a 27-6 defeat.
Cavemen's halfback, Gary
Taylor, was Ashlands main short
circuit. Taylor, the 5-10, 166
pound senior caught five passes
or 92 yards and one touchdown
and carried the ball 1 1 times for
61 yards. Taylor was also one of
Grants Pass mainline defensive
players, breaking up a half a
dozen Wentela passes.
Grants Pass also lead in
rushing with fullback Dennis
Brown. Brown was the game's
leading rusher with 107 yards
in 31 attempts, which always
seemed to come at the right
time.
The Grizzlies mounted many
mild threats, only to be broken
up by a wind of bad luck. In the
third quarter Ashland stopped
the Cavemen and forced them to
punt, setting up the Grizzlies
only scoring drive.
Rich Cowen's punt went out
of bounds at the A.H.S. 47 and
two running plays gave Ashland
a first down at the Cavemen 40.
Lord went off right tackle for
1 1 and a first at the 29 and then
on the next play gained five to
the 24. The Cavemen were called
for face masking on the play,
which moved the ball to the
Grants Pass 12 where it was a
first down.
Lord gained nothing on a
sweep but then Wentela hit
Nelson on a slant for the T.D.
with 4:12 to play in the third
quarter.
Dale Ekstrom's P.A.T.
attempt was wide to the right
and Ashland had done all the
scoring it was destined to.
At the time, the Grizzlies
could still see the road to
victory, although it disappeared
quickly.
Taylor made a brilliant
kick-off return to the Ashland
42, which paved the way for a
quick Cavemen T.D.
Brown made three straight
runs putting the ball on the
Grizzly 26 and then on a fourth
and two situation at the 18,
Brown made seven yards for
another first at the 1 1 .

center Larry Luvis recovered the
Ball to keept the threat alive.
Taylor gained six on a pitchout
and Brown gained one through
the middle to make it fourth and
one. Baker turned the handoff
to Brown but there was a mix-up.
and the Q.B. was stopped for no
gain, giving Ashland the ball on
its own 3.
However, on second down
Lonch fumbled and Grants Pass
recovered on the two.
On third down, Brown leaped
over the 1 yard line to make the
score 20-6. Cater's P.A.T. was no
