Rose burg 72 Cross Country Team As defending district champions, the cross country team has seven returning varsity runners. Fred Sears, almost unknown last year, now holds the number five spot on the team. John Butt, new to the sports scene this year has secured the 7th spot. The other five runners are returnees from last years' District and State team. Last year Ashland beat Madras, the former defending champions, by over fifty points. Claude Neuenschwander took top honors for Ashland with fifth place and Scott Studcbaker took eighth. Flag Girls Mag girls' faces will appear at many football games and pepassemblies this year. This active group may also perform in some parades. Quarterback Keith Wentela hit end Mark Wilson with a series of passes resulting in a 6-0 lead in the second quarter followed by Dale Ekstrom's one-point conversion. At the end of the first half the Grizzlies were still ahead 7-0. The game ended 13-0 in favor of the Grizzlies. Ashland's running suffered from poor timing but Locke also felt that the offensive line wasn't firing out as it should have been. Wentela was very impressive for his first start, completing 10 of 15 passes for 190 yards. The Ashland defense contained Del Norte throughout the contest. However, Tom Womak took game rushing honors with 72 yards on 14 carries and quarterback Rocky Schneider completed 14 of 26 passes for 108 yards. Andy Lonch led the Ashland ball carriers with 32 yards in 10 attempts and Al Lord Gained 28 yards in 1 1 tries. Returning Lettermen Returning letterman for football are: Dale Ekstrom, Dan Hagart, Kerry Keeton, Andy Lonch, Carey Schmaltz, Mike Testerman, Wynn Wenker, Keith Wentela, and Mark Wilson.
