Visitor Finds Equador Unforgettable
The man who wrote "Eight Miles High" for the Byrds and
"Triad" for the Jefferson Airplane has become a rock star in his own
right. David Crosby (late of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young) last
spring released his own album, If I Could Only Remember My Name.
Crosby began his rock career with the Byrds, but was kicked out
of the group because of "political" comments, including remarks
questioning the validity of the Warren Report.
David then began a partnership with the Jefferson Airplane. He
gave them the song, "Triad," which had earlier been rejected by the
Byrds ("Triad," was most recently performed by C, S., N., 7 Y. on
their Four-Way Street album).
If I Could Only Remember My Name is outstanding for the
number of famous rock musicians it brings together. Along with
Crosby's former partners, Graham Nash and Neil Young, and his
brother, Ethan, the album features Joni Mitchell; Santana's
percussion men, Michael Shrieve and Gregg Rolie; novice singer
Laura Allen (who recently put out her own album); Jerry Garcia
(leader of the Grateful Dead); practically the entire Jeff Airplane
(Jack Casady, Paul Kanter, Jorma Kaukonen, and Grace Slick); and
several other artists. Such a versatile group of musicians is bound to
exert influence on the type of music played on the album.
David Crosby's album could be described as a combination of C,
S., N. & Y., Santana, Joni Mitchell, the Grateful Dead, and the
Jefferson Airplane. Indeed, each of the cuts seems to take something
from one of these sources.
"Music is Love," the first cut, is typical Crosby, Stills, Nash and
Young, except that the instru mentals are more varied and polished.
"Cowboy Movie" is just what the title says: a Western story. The
guitar line reflects the influence of the Jefferson Airplane.
The vocals of Tamalpais High (At About 3) are very noticeably C,
S., N.& Y. The Jeff Airplane instrumentals are more than obvious on
this cut. The haunting song, "Laughing," needs no description it has
been played quite a bit on the radio. Despite that fact, it is still an
excellent cut.
What Are Their Names is undoubtedly one of the shortest of all
protest songs. In four lines of lyrics, the song asks the names of "the
men who run this land," and tells what the singer would like to do if
he could find out where they live. Traction in the Rain is an unusual
song featuring an acoustic guitar, Crosby's vocalization, and a harp.
Song With No Words (Trees 'With No Leaves) is just that. Orleans
is a traditional French song (in French), arranged by David Crosby.
The final cut on the album, I'd Swear There Was Somebody Here,
has no lyrics, and thus passes almost unnoticed. In fact, the last
three songs on the album run so closely together that they almost
seem like one cut.
The album, though it borrows heavily from various rock musical
styles, has put these styles together to produce aform of its own.
And this form is perhaps one of the best in rock music today.
Bearded Teachers
"Hubba Hubba, M-m-m
Good," are possible translations
of what Cindy Ragland heard as
she walked down the street in
Cuenca, Ecuador. Miss Ragland
was there this summer through
the American Field Service
Program.
According to Cindy, most of
the boys there are chronic
girl-watchers. They stand on
streetcorners in groups of five or
six and make flattering remarks
at girls passing by. Most families
have a car and quite a few of the
boys go "cruising" through town
or the park. Cindy states,
"They're real male chauvinist
pigs".
There are no formal dates,
unlike in the states. Instead,
during the day couples attend
foreign movies at the theater or
go to the park. Things appear to
quiet down at night because the
cars are put away, and most of
the adults are at home watching
the six to ten TV broadcasts.
Only the most liberal of parents
will allow their children to go
out at night. An exception is
parties. Couples can attend these
parties, which usually last from
about nine in the evening to two
in the morning. Cindy says that
these social gatherings are
"much funner down there."
Cindy would like to urge
more students to join the AFS
Program because their
experiences will be
"unforgettable."
Cindy Ragland (above) spent the summer in Cuenca, Equador
as part of the American Field Service Program.

Lawrence commented that he
had no special reason for
growing his beard but possibly
laziness had something to do
with it. He noted that he could
sense people's various reactions
to him. When asked why he
shaved it off, he stressed that
there was absolutely no school
pressure. He just decided it was
about time for it to go. "I got
very attached to it. I didn't
realize how hard it would be to
get rid of it."
Mr. London went on an
extended camping trip across the
country to the Atlantic coast.
During this time his beard began
to grow. He commented that
took so long for it to grow that
it seemed like a waste to chop it
off. London also noted that this
kind of thing breaks the
stereotyped appearance of
teachers. He said "it is no big
deal but if I get tired of it or if
my wife says 'chop it off," I
will."

A new addition to the campus
this year was the bearded
appearance of several members
of the faculty. Mr. Lawrence and
Mr. London were both asked
bout their beards.
