MAY II. 1971 ROGUE NEWS Page S Baseballers Play Indians, Lose Doubleheaders The Ashland varsity baseball team played the Roseburg Indians on April 30, losing a double-header by scores of 10-0 and 9-4. In the first game, Steve Asher started on the mound for the Grizzlies and was later relieved by Pat Mollahan, while Barry Baker pitched for the Indians. Ashlands' only two hits were made by centerftelder Tim Slapnicka and second baseman Bill Fagan. Fagan tripled in the third inning and Slapnicka had a single. Roseburg had eleven hits. Baker had two dbubles, Keith Cooper and Jim Davidson each went two for three and had a triple apiece, and Norm Hardy was for two for four with a double. In the second game, Doug Carl took the mound for the Indians while Steve Davis threw for the Bears. Roseburg went ahead after their first at-bat, 2-0, but the Grizzlies got a run in their half of the first inning. Slapnicka singled with two out and later scored when Roseburg defender made an error on a ground ball hit by Rick Rosentreter. The Indians scored a run i the third, fifth, and sixth innings, then tallied four times in the seventh, making the score 9-1 as the Ashlanders came to bat in the last of the final inning. Harley Dixon started the inning with a single. Then Fagan mm. BILL LEWIS is ready to slug one against Roseburg. Ashland lost both games of the doubleheader held on the Ashland field. and catcher Charlie Lewis walked to load the bases. Slapnicka then singled, driving in both Dixon and Lewis. After Davis hit into a double play, Rosentreter hit a single, bringing Fagan across with the Grizzlies final run. Junior-Varsity The Ashland JVs also lost a double-header to Roseburg. The Indians won the first game 15-5 and the second 8-1. Gary Sargenti pitched the first game for Ashland and Guy Lewis pitched the second. In the first game, Roseburg got 12 hits. Ashland got two singles, one by John Kuykendall and the other by Alan Tinker. The Bears also made several errors and issued 1 2 walks. In the second game the Indians scored eight runs and the Grizzlies got . one.
