Dears Beat Crater Comets, 60-57 District Nears for Matmen The Varsity matmen traveled to Corvallis February 27 for a tournament held there between Woodburn, Corvallis, and Ashland. The squad traveled home with the first place honors from the tournament as they defeated Corvallis 34-13, and beat Woodburn, last year's AA state champions, 38-9. Tournament scores placed Ashland first with 53 points, Woodburn second at 35 points, and Corvallis placed third with 27. Nine Grizzly wrestlers placed first in their weight classes at the tournament. Jim Durbin, Rick Sinclair, Frank Goodlett, Roger Jones, Randy Litwiller, Mike Silvius, Tom Ellis, Jerry Sutton, and Charlie Taylor were the nine first place winners. Steve Wilson and Darrel Troutman held second places and John Studebaker and Dan Stephens placed third in the tournament. The Varsity team has seen competition in 26 meets so far this year and has a record of 2 1 wins and only 5 losses. The matmen lost two matches to Grants Pass, one to Medford, one to Roseburg, and one to the Klamath Falls wrestling squad. The wrestlers are now preparing for the District Meet to be held in Roseburg, Saturday, March 7. District is the last scheduled meet for the wrestlers this season. Gymnasts Take Top Honors The Ashland High School's girls' gymnastics team defeated Medford Thursday, February 18, by a team score of 53.65 to 41.70. Elaine Fisher placed first in two of the four events. Sharon Hill, a freshman member of Ashland's team was chosen the meet's outstanding performer by winning the all-around competition. The gymnastic team will close out this year's season with a meet at Phoenix on February 27. During the game's first two quarters, the Grizzlies trailed the Comets 13-20 and 34-37. With 4:37 left in the third period, Crater over the Bears, 42-35. However, Ashland guard Bill Smith hit two free throws and Mark Wilson made a 1 5-foot jump shot, cutting Crater's lead to three points. With 2:52 left in the quarter, both Doug Croshell and Tim Slapnicka scored field goals, making it 44-41. After being fouled by Tom Kelly, Slapnicka stepped to the line and sank two free shots, bringing Ashland to within one point of Crater. Then, with 1 : 33 left in the third period, Ellis and Croshell each hit a field goal to put the Comets ahead by five points. However, the Bears scored five points in the last 28 seconds, tieing the game at 48 all. In the first minutes of the fourth quarter the lead changed back and forth between the two teams several times, but with 3:20 left in the game Wilson put the Grizzlies ahead for good with a 20-foot field goal. Even though Crater failed to regain the lead after the Bears Sophnores Lose; Junior Varsity Split Two Games A low scoring third quarter, after leading 39-37 ai halftime, spelled defeat for the sophomore team. 92-70 at the hands of the Grants Pass Sophs. Jeff Glassop with 24 points and Andy Lonch with 14 led the Grizzly scoring. Sophs Lose The drought continued at Central Point on Friday night, the 26th, as the Sophs lost to Crater 61-33. Jeff Glassop again led the team scoring with 15 points. JV's Beat Crater Out scoring Crater 23 to 13 in the final quarter, the Jayvee team came from behind to win 54 to 49. Crater took the lead early in the second quarter and led until the last three minutes. Craig Siebcnlist with 17 points and Keith Wentela with 10 led the scoring. On Saturday night Craig Siebenlist again had 17 points, with Kerry Keeton adding 10, and John Welch as the Jayvees were outgunned by Grants Pass 98 to 58. went ahead 56-54, the game remained very close, as the Grizzlies missed three one-and-one free shots chances. Eighteen seconds after he missed a free shot, and 10 seconds left in the game, Keith Wentela hit two free chances and made the score 60-55 Ashland. - Then Kelly sank a field goal, making the score 60-57. Toll High Scorer The game's high scorer was Toll, who made 7 field goals and 7 free throws for a total of 21 points. Steve Harthun of Crater was second with 16 and Wilson was third with 15. Ashland Head Coach Dick Copple said of the game, "I thought we played a real good game. We had fine team play in the second half, and that enabled us to win. Scott Toll in particular played a great game, getting 20 rebounds as well as a career high of 21 points, and everyone else did a good job." JV Matmen Place Well A t Phoenix Tournament While the Grizzly varsity wrestling squad visited competiton at a tournament in Corvallis, the junior varisty traveled to Phoenix for a tournament. Phoenix hosted Medford, Grants Pass, and Ashland in the four-way meet held Saturday, February 27. Out of the overall competition, Mark Walter wrestling at 175 lbs. and Mike Everest wrestling at 168 grabbed fust place honors for the Ashland squad. Several Grizzly wrestlers grabbed second place positions at the meet. Tom Wood at 1 1 5 lb s, Wally Vait at 1 23 lbs.. Glen Wilson at 130 lbs., Gordon Mobley at 136 lbs., and Wes Crippen at 141 aU placed second in the competition. Jerry Ross tied for second place also with Piaya of Medford. The dual meet scores showed PHoenix tied with Medford at 20 points each, Ashland losing to Grants Pass 13-42, Ashland beating Phoenix 33-15, Medford losing to Grants Pass 8-51, Phoenix losing to Grants Pass 1 1-46, and Medford losing to Ashland 7-35. Tournament scores handed the first place honors to Grants Pass with a total of 54 points.
