Bellotti Scores 35
Grizzlies Beaten By Pelicans
JV's, Sophs Play Pols,
Sophs, Lose, Jay-Voes Win
Kla maths' Jerry Bellotti made
35 points on Feb. 5 as he led his
team to a 71-57 victory over the
Ashland Grizzlies.
In the game, the Bears scored
first when Tim Slapnicka sank a
fifteen-footer, and then made it
4-0 after Mark Wilson stole a
Klamath Falls pass and dribbled
the length of the court to score.
Both teams stayed even
through the first quarter, but
Todd Kellstrom gave the
Pelicans a 16-14 lead just before
the buzzer.
The Grizzlies regained the
lead early in the second quarter
as Dave Doerter and Wilson each
hit field goals to give Ashland a
21-20 lead with 5:46 left in the
half. Bellotti then made four
points and Wilson hit with a
jump shot, making the score
24-23 Klamath.
In the closing minutes of the
first half, Sophomore Jeft
Bradford made two field Roals to
put the Pel: ahead, 33-29.
In the third quarter, behind
good outside shooting by Bill
Smith, the Grizzlies matched the

Pelicans almost basket for
basket. With only 2 seconds left
in the period. Smith hit a
25-footer that tied the score at
46-46.
In the first four minutes of
the final period, Ashland made
two free shots and missed eight
field goals, while the Pels shot to
a 61-48 lead.
The Grizzlies cut Klamaths'
lead to 61-58 with three minutes
left in the game, but the Pelicans
had a margin to big to overcome.
The games' top scorer was
Bellotti. Ashlands Wilson was
next, with 22 points, while
Smith was third with 19. Steve
Pettit was the only other Pelican
to score in double figures, with a
total of 14 points.
Ashland Varsity Coach Dick
Copple said of the game, "We
played a fine game. Everyone
did a good job. I think that this
was the best game we've played
all season."
The Ashland Junior-Varsity
and Sophomore basketball teams
played Klamath Falls on
February 5, winning 76-69 and
losing 75-63 respectively.
For the JVs, guard Craig
Siebenlist of Ashland led the
scoring, sinking seven field goals
and ten free throws for a total of
24 points. Klamath Falls' Bill
Putnam was second with 22
points. Most of his eight field
goals came on long jump shots.
Ashland Junior-Varisity
Coach Dick Krominga said,
"This was the best game we have
played all year. We have good
material and this time we got it
all together. We had both a good
defense and a good offense.
Craig Siebenlist did a fine job,
and so did Dan Hagert. Dan got
a lot of rebounds and scored 13
points, his highest score of the
year so far."
In the Sophonore game, Jeff
Glossop scored 22 points and
Steve Taylor sank 19, but
Ashland still lost to Klamath by
12 points.
At the half, the Grizzlies were
behind by 14 points, 40-26.
In the third quarter they
closed the gap to ten points but
Andy Holzgang and Richard
Edge began hitting for Klamath
Falls. Edge was the top scorer
for the Pels with 19, while
Holzgang was just behind him
with 18.
Grizzly Coach Arlan Foote
stated, "We just didn't start soon
enough. We didn't start to play
ball until the fourth quarter, but
by then it was too late."

HooDoo Bowl near Bend was
the scene of a ski meet held on
January 30 in which the Ashland
team placed third in both the
varsity girls and boys division.
The team also placed third in
team standings.
The team had good showing
in individual results. Sue Binkley
with a time of 41.4 seconds,
Gwen Dreiszus with 45.4
seconds, and Tony Barnes who
had a time of 50.4 seconds. The
girls placed 6, 10, and 18

Ashland Places at Hoo Doo
respectively in the varsity girls
division.
In the boys division the
Ashland individual results were:
Dean Fortmiller with a time of
55.75 seconds, Al Lord with
1:00.8 seconds, and David
Cowan who turned in a time of
1 : 1 1 .6 seconds. The boys placed
3, 10, and 25 respectively in the
varsity boys division.
