RARE EARTH RECORDS - f?trcfS- iJceKrE.- Jazz Pops Contemporary jazz, Germin, contemporary, and folk music were featured at the Jazz Pops Concert on December 8 in the cafeteria. Sponsored by the AHS Jazz Lab band, the concert featured the jazz band, the Hillah Temple German Band, the Pat McCoy Trio, and folk singer Doug Daniels. Co-hostesses Billie Hays and Diane Jensen introduced the different selections after jazz lab director Mr. David Wight opened the program. Numbers by the Jazz Lab ranged from "This Guy's In Love With You", with solos by Ken Cook on trumpet and Billie Hays on saxaphone, to the closing number, "Psychodelphia", with the entire group doing a vocal section. The German Band, which includes six music teachers and a principal, played various waltzes and polkas, concluding their performance with "The Happy Wanderer." Contemporary music was selected by the Pat McCoy Trio, Forensicators Second, Third The Ashland High School debate squad made a good showing by taking second place at the Pacific University Debate Tournament in Forest Grove, December 4 and 5. Bill Ellis placed second in senior division Lincoln-Douglas debate. He also made semi-finals in extemporaneous speaking. Cathi Galati took third in senior New Computer Class Offered Among the other studies classes given as a choice this year was computer programming in which students could choose the elective and learn to program computers. Several students chose this elective as it was offered during daytime curriculum for the first time this school year. This computer came about from a night class offered last year which was federally funded and was not limited as to who could attend. There are two classes of computer programming in which Mr. Keil teaches a class of about 50 students and Mr. Garrett teaches 23 students advanced computer programming. The students are working with two machines, the ECP-18 computer and the IBM-360 Model 65 which computes to Portland by telephone and receives an answer back in seconds. 15 N. MAIN Concert Was Held 5 THE TRUMPET section performs during the jazz concert for the students. who pertormed '"Autumn Leaves," "I'll Take Romance," and a selection from "Porgy and Bess." Doug Daniels sang "She's a Lady" and "Leaving on a jet plane", accompanied by Kent Clinkenbeard of the Pat McCoy Trio on drums. A brief concert was presented to members of the student body earlier in the day, to give them a sample of what to expect at the night performance. Capture Places division oratory, and was a semi-finalist in serious interpretation. Julie Davies made finals in oratory. Ashland came out ahead of 60 of the 61 other schools to participate in the tournament. With 18 points, the team missed sweepstakes by only two points. This was also the first major tournament for junior division debaters, with nine of the beginning students taking part. Ashland High's next tournament will be at Portland State University, January 14-16. The next week, the city of Ashland will host a debate tournament, which will be held at Southern Oregon College. 779 4357 Will Call HELP Bec January 1st there will be .. .4 hour phone service available to anyone who would like to call concerning a problem, an emergency, a hangup, or anything that they would like to talk about. The phone service, which is called HELP, can be reached by calling 779-4357, which spells HELP. The phone calls will be taken by two volunteer operators who will talk with the caller about anything as long as the caller wants to talk. The operators can also connect the caller with one of several "resources" that consist of ministers, priests, hospitals, and policemen who have volunteered their time and efforts to the program. HELP was begun by several VISTA volunteers who, in the words of one worker, "decided it was needed." It is backed by several participating agencies such as the Wall Street Journal. An Island of Refreshment Open After Games BILL BOYCE plays a solo during the jazz concert presented to the students during 7th period on December 8. (HUM the Mental Health Association, the ADC Aid to Dependent Children, the YMCA. and the Family Guidance Clinic. The program is run by an advisory board which now instructs the phone line operators which consist of 50 volunteers from all walks of life.
