team did real well. This is the
best team Ashland has had in
many years over all. Both last
year's team and this year's team
were capable of beating anyone
in the state on any given night,
and we never went into a game I
didn't feel we could win."

that the main reason the team did such an outstanding job this year
is because they ran as a team.

The Ashland Junior-Varsity
and Sophomore football teams
ended the 1970 season with 2-2
and 5-1 records, respectively.
On the JV team, the rushing
fell mainly on running back Al
Lord and fullback George Morse.
The top passer on the Junior
Varsity was Bill Fagan, who had
a fair completion record for the
season.
The pass receiving duties were
divided up between three
players: Mike Testerman, Dennis
Leybold.and Dale Extrom.
Coach Bill Leybold said of
the team, "We were limited in
number, and worked out with
the varsity and not as a separate
team. Considering this, we did a
commendable job. The chief
value of the team was that it
gave necessary experience to
several good juniors that should
play with the varsity next year."
Of the four games played, the
JV team beat Crater by a score
of 20-1 8 and Medford by a score
of 8-6. They lost to Klamath
Falls 27-22, and Roseburg 40-6.
On the Sophomore squad,
Larry Toney was the leading
rusher. Toney got 570 yards in
four games, missing two games
because of injuries.
The Sophomore's leading
passer was Craig Siebenlist, who
threw 12 touchdown passes
during the season.
Charley Lewis was the leading
pass receiver, catching 7 scoring
tlirows.
Defensively, Charley Taylor,
defensive tackle; Hugh Huck,
defensive end; and Mark Walters,
defensive end, did a fine job.
There were only four
touchdowns scored against the
first string defense all year.
The sophomores won 5 out
of six games, beating Klamath
36-0, Crater SO-14, Yreka 38-14,
Roseburg 48-20, and Klamath
again, 26-0. They lost to
Medford 9-0.
Coach Dick Krominga stated,
"We had a real good season. We
didnt have a lot of people, but
we played good football. The
team had a good attitude and
liked to win, and that's what it's
all about."
