In the game, the Bears' offense was held to -I yard on the ground by the tough Grants Pass defensive team, and picked up 38 yards by passing. In contrast, the Cavemen gained 101 yards byrushingand 85 yards by passing. Their leading rusher was substitute fullback Dennis Brown, who compiled 73 yards in 22 carries. He came in when Ron Cluster, the regular fullback, suffered a leg injury. In the first quarter of the game, the Cavemen went 55 yards in eight plays for their first touchdown, scoring on a 23-yard pass from quarterback Jim Sanders to halfback Rich Cowan. Ralph Van Delden then kicked the point after, making the score 7-0. In the second quarter. Grants Pass scored on another Sanders to Cowan pass, this one covering 22 yards. Van Delden then booted the extra point. P. scoreless, but in the fourth the Cavemen again scored. One of the tallies was a 19-yard field goal by Van Delden, which followed right on the heels of a 36-yard pass interception by Ken Behymer. Later in the quarter, Ashland punter Kerry Keeton punted to Van Delden, who scored on a 52-yard run-back. Van Delden then attempted to kick the extra point, but failed, making the score 23-0. Offensively, Grants Pass ran 64 plays while Ashland ran 36. The Grizzlies were led by senior halfback Steve Davis, who gained 26 yards in ten carries. Ashland fullback Jeny Sutton, who had been making an average of 132 yards every game, was held to nine by the Grants Pass defense. During the game, the Grizzlies missed the services of starting left guard Mark Engle and substitute fullback Andy Lonch, who were both injured the week before. Ashland's season record now stands at 5-2, and the Grizzlies are tied for third place with the Crater Comets and the Klamath Falls Pelicans. Sophomore Football Team Defeats Roseburg 48-20 The sophomore football squad split the last two games they played as they tromped Roseburg 48-20 and then were shut out by Medford by a score of 9-0. The action started off with a bang as Charlie Lewis ran back the opening kick-off to score for the Ashland squad. One of several touchdown drives was set up when Hugh Huck blocked a Roseburg punt giving a big advantage to the Grizzly sophomores. Rick Sinclaire set up another drive to score a touchdown which was followed by a two point conversion. The score at thehalf was Ashland 20 and Roseburg 8. The Soph's met defeat at Medford as they were held scoreless the entire game and Medford scored 9 points. Coach Krominga said the game was good defensively.
