PACE FOUR ROGUE NEWS FRI..OCT. 30. 1970 Grizzly The Ashland High School cross country team attended the North Marion Invitational in Aurora. Oregon near Portland. The Grizzlies traveled to Auroraon October 14 to attend one of the largest invitationals held in the state this year. Some 41 schools attended the meet with approximately 600 runners participating. The schools were divided up into class divisions with the Grizzlies bringing home the first place trophy in the class "A" division. Representing the Ashland squad at the invitational were Claude Neuenschwander placing third with a time of 12:12, Scott Studebaker in fifth place recording a time of 12:17, Bill McPherson in sixth place in a time of 12:21, Tom McDowell placing 1 Ith in a time of 12:46, and Jay Holland placing 13th with a time of 12:49. The varsity squad totaled 38 points with the second place team from Astoria totaling 69 points and the third place was occupied by Silverton totaling 149 points. The Grizzly runners stayed in a close knit group as there were 120 runners in their division and they placed from third place to thirteenth place. Mark Maxwell Photo Support Our Advertisers mm Cross Country Team Triumphs Marion meet, the Grizzly runners traveled to the Bear Creek course at Medford for a meet with Medford and Klamath Falls. The Grizzlies won the meet scoring 25 points, Klamath Falls placed second with 36, and Medford ended up in third position with 71. Ashland grabbed five positions out of the top ten as Neuenschwander, Studebaker, McPherson, McDowell, and Holland all finished in the first ten. The Grizzly squad hosted Rosehurg here and demonstrated their strong running ability as they downed the Roscburg Indians by a score of 20-47. Studebaker finished first for the Grizzlies with Neuenschwander finishing one second behind Studebaker. Ashland placed six runners in the first ten spots. The Grizzlies hosted the Ashland Invitational on the l-migrant Lake course and defeated Medford and Crater by collecting 23 points. Medford placed second with SS and Crater had 87. Neuenschwander set a new course record at a time of 13:44, breaking his old record of 14:13. Last week the Grizzlies attended the District meet held at Crater. Attending the meet were Ashland, Crater, Grants Pass, Roseburg, Klamath Falls, and Medford. Studebaker, McPherson, Neuenschwander, McDowell, and Holland all placed in the first eleven slots. Ashland finished first with 40 points, Klamath Falls was second with 60, Grants Pass third with 61, Roscburg fourth with 78, Crater fifth with 108, and Medford last holding 148 points. The Grizzly runners lost only one meet this season by one point to Klamath Falls. The Grizzlies travel to Fugene November 7 to attend the state meet held at Lane Community College. JV's Win Ono, Lose One The Ashland Junior -Varsity football team played the Medford Black Tornado on October 12 and the Roscburg Indians on the 17th, winning the first game 8-6 and losing the second 40-6. In the Medford game, Al Lord scored the Grizzlies only touchdown on a run. The Bears Liter added a two-point safety when the defensive team kept the Tornados bottled up near their own goal line and their punter stepped out of the end-zone. Grizzly Coach Keith Ganett said of the game, "We really wanted to win this game, and we hit harder than Medford did. All in all, the team did real well. In the Roseburg game, George Morse scored Ashland's only touchdown on a plunge over the middle. Said Coach Garrett about the game, "Many of our key players were injured and could not play, and because of this our offense bogged down and we couldn't move the ball." Coach Leybold went on to say, "The defense played most of the time, as the offense could not control the ball. Still, the defensive team contained Roseburg well until the fourth quarter, when the Indians scored most of their touchdowns." DRIVE-IN
