GRIZZLIES BEAT YREKA MINERS 26 - 0
PAGE FOUR
Ashland's varsity football
team won their fourth straight
game on October 2, beating
the Yreka Miners by a score of
36-20.
In the game, Grizzly fullback
Jerry Sutton kept his string of
three touchdowns a game alive,
making one touchdown in the
second quarter and scoring two
in the third.
In the first quarter, neither
Ashland or Yreka was able to
score.
However, halfway into the
second quarter, Grizzly
quarterback Tim Slapnicka
finished a 58-yard Bear drive by
scoring the firt touchdown of
the game on a 23-yard run. He
then threw a pass to wingback
Roger Jones for the extra 2
points.
The Miners struck back with
a 55-yard pass from quarterback
Lee Painter to end Chuck
DeRose, who ran the last 20
yards to the goal line. The 2
point conversion failed,
however, when DeRose, the
intended receiver for a Painter
pass, fell down.
Just before the half, Ashland
made the score 14-6 when
Sutton plunged over from the
two-yard line after a Grizzly
drive of 59 yards.
In the third quarter, Ashland
struck again, making the score
18-6, with Sutton making his
second touchdown on a 51 -yard
run up the middle.
Yreka failed to move the ball
and punted.
Slapnicka then scored
Ashland's 4th TD of the evening
on a 31 -yard run, and tailback
Steve Davis scored the 2 points.
The Miners lost the ball on a
fumble, and after an Ashland
drive, Sutton made his third
touchdown on a 17-yard run.
Jones then scored the 2 points.
Yreka added 14 points in the
4th quarter, making the game
36-20.
In Ashland's 3 previous
games, all wins, the scores were:
Crescent City, 29-0; Lebanon,
26-14; and Albany, 31-6.
Of the four non-conference
games, Ashland Head Coach
Lance Locke said "Winning
these first games is a fine start,
but none of the teams were
particularly tough. Our real test
will come when we begin
conference play."

Ashland Plays Medford
Grizzly Coach Confident
"The Ashland-Medford
football game always means
more to both students and
players than any other football
game of the year," said Grizzly
Head Coach Lance Locke.
This year's Black Tornado vs
Grizzly game will be played on
October 9, 1970 at 8:00 at the
Medford High School Stadium.
Last year, a powerful Ashland
team, for the first time since
1947, beat the Medford Black
Tornado by a score of 20-0.
This year, the coaches,
teachers, and students of
Ashland High School believe
that we can again beat Medford.
In comparing our team to
Medford's, Coach Locke said
"We are a stronger running team
and by the time the game starts,
we should be their equal in
passing, as quarterback Tim
Slapnicka has been improving
steadily. Also, we have a fine
receiver, in Sophomore end Mark
Wilson, who has good speed on
deep pass patterns. Our short
receivers also run good patterns,
and if our defensive line
continues to improve, we should
be superior to the Black
Tornado on defense.
Medford has two big threats:
the passing of Speigelberg to
Singier, which averages three
touchdowns a game, and the
running of fullback Jerry
Johnson. The main threat,
however, is deep passes.
Regarding team morale,
Coach Locke stated that "We
have a lot of support from the
students and yell leaders, and we
have more enthusiasm towards
this game than I have ever seen
in football."
