WED., JUNE 3, 1970 Visits Tijuana Dump Assembly Honors ahs class Helps Needy Ashland Students The special education class at Ashland High, for several months has been planning a project, which will take them nearly 900 miles from Ashland. The group plans to leave June 8, with four adults accompanying them on the two-week trip. The students plan to extend a helping hand to the poverty-stricken people living in a dump outside the city limits of Tijuana, Mexico. Students in the class have been collecting donations of food, medical supplies, and clothing. They have also held many fund raising projects, like washing cars and collecting bottles, to help finance the trip. Travel to their destination is estimated to taice at least two days. Approximately three of four days will be spent with the Mexican people, helping distribute the clothing and medical supplies. Dr. Neil Mothason attended one of the special education class sessions and gave the class the trip idea. Dr. Mothason discussed with the students stories he had read in a California newspaper about a Joe Brown, from Pomona, Calif., who at one time was traveling with a church group, when the bus they were traveling in developed trouble near Tijuana, Mexico. Brown walked for help and in the course of his search for help, he discovered approximately 150 people living in a dump. The people lacked food, water, and medical supplies. THE SLOVENLINESS of a Tijuana dump soon to be visited by the Special Education class is shown here. Ashland High School has become culturally enlightened through the presentation of "Riders to the Sea" and the Spring Art Show. The play was presented by the Drama Guild May 13 and 14 to the student body and then to the general public Thursday evening at 8:00 p.m. Mr. London, the director, selected the play because it required a small cast and was fairly short. Also because it is sometimes referred to as the perfect one act play. Ragland Plays Lead Vickie Ragland, playing the lead role of Mauyra, (the old mother), felt that it was a very worthwhile learning experience. Others in the cast were Sara Fink as Cathleen, Jim Litchfield as Bartley, Anne Mayea as Nora, Betty Scull and Madeline Wright as old women and Larry Taylor and Danny Stephens as old men. Mr. London feels that the cast responded well to direction and that the acting was of college caliber. The play was a tragedy depicting the sorrows of an old Irish mother who has lost six sons to the sea. Art Show Featured In addition to the play the Spring 'Art Show was also presented on the same evening, featuring a group of guitar players. Mrs. Marker, art and crafts teacher, has wishes for expanding the spring art festival. "I would personally like to see the Spring Art Show turned into a well-attended festival incorporating more music as well as the art, drama and food perhaps provided through AHS club participation. All this would be well publicized. She also mentioned that parents touring the presentation were quite impressed. The student body was invited to view the show the following day at noon. Ashland Juniors Attend Boys , Boys State and Girls State are set up like an American State. The representatives attending are divided into two political parties, the Federalists and the Nationalists. Both the boys and girls are also placed in one of four cities. Two of the cities combine to form a county. This small scale state situation is set up for the purpose of electing officials for city, county and state positions. Each convention is a plan for training in the functional aspects of citizenship. It teaches the youth of today constructive attitudes toward the American form of government. mm Top row: Boy's Staters Tim Slapnicka, Kit Nidever, and Jerry Scannell.
