FRI., MAY IS, 1970 ROGUE NEWS PACE THREE JV Baseballers Lose 2 To Tribe The Ashland JV baseball squad played the Roseburg Indians on May 2, losing two games by scores of 10-2 and 18-1. In the first game, Gary Sargenti pitched for the Grizzlies, while Tim Tester took the mound for the Indians. Tester went all the way and picked up the win. The big hitters for Ashland in this game were Steve Ekwall, who had one hit in two at-bats, and Bill Ellis, Dave Hutchinson, and Alan Tinker who all had 1-3. Ashland scored their two runs in the second inning, while Roseburg got 4 in the first, 1 in the third, 2 in the fifth, 2 in the sixth, and 1 in the seventh. In the second game, Mike Hagan and Dave Hyde took the mound for Ashland, while Randy Smith pitched for the Indians. Smith got the win. The Grizzly batsmen who had hits in this game were: Bill Fagan, who had 2-3, Ekwall, 1-3, Hutchinson, 2-3, and Joel Mobley, who had 1-2. Ashland scored in the fifth inning, when Mobley doubled and Fagan hit him in. The Indians scored 2 runs in the first inning, 2. in the third, 5 in the fifth, and 9 in the sixth. Lose Practice On April 30, the JVs played a practice game with Prospect, losing 10-7. Indians Blank Bears Twice; Give Up One Hit The Varsity baseball team traveled to Roseburg High School on May 2, and lost both games of the doubleheader, 6-0 and 7-0, while getting only one hit. In the first game. Randy Nelson pitched for the Ashland Grizzlies while Terry Cornutt took the mound for the Indians. Cornutt pitched a no-hitter. In the fourth inning of the game the Bears got two men as far as third base, but could not bring them in to score. The Indians got 1 run in the third inning, 3 in the fourth, and 2 in the fifth. In game two Barry Baker pitched for the Indians, while Charlie James and Rick Rosentreter pitched for the Grizzlies. Baker picked up the win. Scott Jenson was the only one to hit for Ashland, getting one hit in the second inning. Roseburg scored 4 runs in the second inning and 3 runs in the third. ASHLAND SANITARY SERVICE Just the kind you like 62 East Main Fagan pitched for the Grizzlies, going all the way. Ashland got 1 run in the second, 2 in the third, 1 in the fourth, 1 in the sixth, and 2 in the seventh. Prospect scored 2 in the first, 2 in the second, I in the third, 4 in the fifth, and 1 in the sixth. The big hitters for Ashland were: Hutchinson, with two doubles in three at-bats, Ekwall, who had a triple, double, and single in four trips to the plate, Tinker, who had 2-4, Dean Fortmiller, 1-3, and Mike Testerman, who had 1-4. Drop Butte Game The Ashland JV baseball team traveled to Butte Falls on May 7, losing 6-0. Dave Hyde pitched the game for the Grizzlies, striking out nine men and walking one. In the game Bill Fagan had two hits in three trips to the plate, while Dean Fortmiller had one hit in two tries. Butte Falls scored 2 runs in the first inning, I in the second, 1 in the third, and 2 in the sixth. Trocksters Win 2 Meets And Send Duo To State The girls of the Ashland High track team finished their season with a flourish, winning their last two meets and sending two girls to state. The AHS girls defeated Crater and Phoenix with a score of 61. First in that meet were Ellen Reynolds, breaking her own record of 16'W to 16'lVi" in the long jump, Gerrie Clark with a time of 16.7 seconds in the 100 meter hurdles and Julie Davies with a time of 33.5 seconds in the 200 meter hurdles. In a second winning match Ashland took Rogue River and Illinois Valley with a score of 69V4. With seven firsts, Valerie Zboril placed twice putting the shot 31'-7" and throwing the javelin 107'-3". Other firsts were the 440 relay team, consisting of Stephanie Sceva, Barbara Krause, Anita Baker and Ellen Reynolds. Their time was 53 seconds. Springfield will be hosting two of our Ashland girls Saturday May 15, for the Oregon State meet. The two candidates for state are Julie Davies and Valerie Zboril. Miss Davies took a first place in the 200 meter hurdles last Saturday at the district meet in Grants Pass. Her time was 32.5. Also at the district meet taking second place in the javelin Miss Zboril threw a record breaking 108'-2' Coach Betty Kimball is very proud of the team, however, she is disappointed in that she was expecting four girls to attend the State meet instead of only two. She was also pleased to note that the performances of Miss Davies and Miss Zboril represent their best showing this season. M SOUTH AOTLETT ST. MEDTORO, OREGON (7801 Sweep Corvallis Meet Grizzlies Snare Wins, Trackmen Clobber GP Ashland High thinclads won their first home meet against Grants Pass and previous one at Corvallis. Friday, May 9, the Grizzlies romped to an 82-54 decision over Grants Pacs. The Ashlanders had top hono' s in the 440 relay, the mile relay, the 440, the shot put, the high jump; the high hurdles, the long jump, the two mile, the 220 and the low hurdles. The 440-relay team of Dan Phillips, Jim Pardee, Mike Toney and Ed Beadle broke a meet record with a 44.3 timing. Roger Hall was clocked at 14.5 seconds in the high hurdles and Pardee set a meet record and tied a school mark in the long jump with a 22-9 34 effort. Pardee also had a first in the low hurdles. Hall was not in this second hurdles event. Beadle ran the 440 in 51.5 for another Ashland first. Brian Keiling cleared 5-llli in the high jump, Jim McLean ran the two mile in 9:59, Toney was timed at 23.2 in the 220 and the relay team of Tom McDowell, Scott Eliott, Al Lord and Toney won the Mile race. The triangular meet against Corvallis and North Salem, saw the AHS cindermen take nine first to gain a victory. The Grizzlies scored 73 points. Host team Corvallis followed with 63 and North Salem finished with 34. Two runners broke AHS sophomore records. Claude Neuenschwander broke his own record in the mile with a time of 4:30.3. However, he only received second p.lace, being beaten by one tenth of a second. Tom McDowell also broke a sophomore record in the 880 yard run with a time of 2:01.4. However, it also was only good enough for second. Several season and personal best times were also recorded. Mike Toney, took first in the 440 yard dash tying his personal best of 52 seconds flat. In the 220 yard dash Ed Beadle broke the tape with his best time of the season, 22.7 seconds. The Ashland mile relay team also turned in it's season best. Roger Hall, McDowell, Toney and Beadle posted the time of I v . ' "" "T """" JIM McLEAN, Grizzly distance specialist, shows a happy grin as he breaks the tape to win the 2-mile run. The clock showed a time of 9:59, good time considering the cold rainy weather and the straggling finishers pictured behind him. CAMPUS 9 M .' i 'r : 1 " 1,1,1 "" 1 A RAINSOAKED Danny Phillips leaps into a soggy broadjump pit with a sizeable leap, not quite sizeable to gain him a place. Phillips luck was better when the 440 relay team he and Jim Pardee, Mike Toney, and Ed Beadle ran broke a meet record with a time of 44.3. 3:27.2, the second best time in the state. Hall continued to remain unbeaten in both the high and low hurdles. He ran the highs in 14.2 seconds and the lows in 19.7. The 22-foot mark in the long jump was broken as Pardee soared 22-1.
